Question Copying settings in Outlook 2007 from XP to Vista

    Hi all,

I have a very simple quick question, that hopefully someone can help me with. I am currently dual booting with XP Pro and Vista Ultimate. I have been using XP Pro for ages and have tons of emails and settings in my XP Outlook 2007 I want to copy to the Vista version.

What is the best way to do this? Can i just install office 2007 in Vista, and direct it to 'pick up all the settings' from the version installed on the XP hard disc, or is there a good (free, or cheap hopefully) program that copies all the emails, filters, rules, spam settings, account settings, etc etc to the new version?

    Any help much appreciated, TIA,

    Cocksy.

not an Outlook 2007 user, but if it is similar to previous versions, just copy the .pst file to some removeable media, then import it to the other system.

I think this only copies the actual emails though, it doesn't copy all the account settings etc - i may be wrong - can anyone clarify this? Cheers

I've not, so I'll look into it, but I dont think it will copy the emails & settings from outlook 2007. Are there any decent programs that copy these settings?

Why wouldn't it?... Files & Settings Wizard essentially copies your user profile into a file for Vista to import everything.

Re: Copying settings in Outlook 2007 from XP to Vista

It looks like file & settings transfer will copy setting for windows and outlook express, but not outlook. Can anyone else help me with this problem - I have found a bunch of small programs on the internet which seem to do the job, but can anyone recommend one that is any good? I dont want to pay for a program to find its rubbish!!! TIA,

Re: Copying settings in Outlook 2007 from XP to Vista

I don't believe that is the case, but to make absolutely sure there's no cockup, do the file copying by hand. The relevant files/folders are in C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername\Application Data (a hidden folder), just pop those files back into C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Remote (another hidden folder) with Vista installed. There's also the more powerful Backup tool if you have XP Pro which will definitely do the job.

Re: Copying settings in Outlook 2007 from XP to Vista

    Hi aidanjt,

I do have XP Pro, can you elaborate on this other method... please!!!

Also, will copying the entire Settings\YourUsername\Application Data folder copy all the outlook 2007 messages, message rules, accounts, account settings, folders, blocked spammers etc etc?

I just tried the setting and files transfer wizzard, and it has outlook express as an option to back up, (among a whole host of windows back up options) but not outlook 2007. Any thoughts?

    TIA

Re: Copying settings in Outlook 2007 from XP to Vista

When I transferred from XP to Vista i used the settings transfer that comes with Office. If you looking in the Microsoft Office programs group, and then the Tools sub section, there should be a transfer settings option ( I think it's called Save my Settings wizard ). I also copied my .pst data files manually though, as this just seems to back up the settings.

However, although this transferred across my account details and mail rules and .pst locations etc, I seem to have lost my address book. With your setup though you can at least try it out and see how complete it is.

Re: Copying settings in Outlook 2007 from XP to Vista

There are a few applications out there which make this process easier.

    http://ajsystems.com/obpdnload.html

That particular one has a 15 day free trial, which is apparently not limited. Like I said, plenty more apps like that one, maybe there is a complete free one somewhere too.

    Hope it helps

Here's some more info on what I was on about :

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826809
    http://www.windowsitpro.com/Articles...045/25045.html

The MS article does state that it doesnt include the pst and pab files (which is why I lost my contact list ), but they are easily transferred manually.

I do remember before I used this wizard, that a few people online had said that it hadnt worked at all forthem when going from XP to Vista. I decided to try it anyway, and it worked fine for me

Hi Pup - that looked like exactly what I was looking for. unfortunately, in its wisdom, microsoft decided to remove that feature from office 2007. So I'm gonna look into the app that Rishi recommended, and the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard...

We'll see how it goes.. Cheers,
