    Vista and now Linux

Alright, I want to install Ubuntu next to Vista. I did research and all, but I just want someone to confirm this is right.

So, is this right? I don't need to do more? Any tips?
    1) Install Vista (already happened ^^ )
    2) Configure partitions, 1 partition for Linux (50gb), 1 partition for Linux Swap(1gb)
    3) Install Ubuntu
    4) Pray the bootloader works

    Re: Vista and now Linux

Pretty much! If you are really worried, take a backup of the disk first.

    Edit - Er NO!!!!

I just recalled something about the Vista Bootloader - a quick Google found this....

Vista requires that the Vista bootloader be present in the MBR in order to boot. If you put any other bootloader in the MBR (like Grub stage1), Vista will refuse to boot saying that winload.exe is corrupt. This is because Vista's loader checks for a disk signature in the MBR! More info is available here: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=55415. Microsoft talks about it in a whitepaper giving some weird reasons: http://www.google.co.in/search?q=OEMBoot_Vista.
If you want to try Ubuntu, then either install a separate hard drive and remove/disconnect the Vista drive, or use a live CD version. However I'd advise against doing what you suggested until yopu have done a little more research on the subject, starting with the links in the quote. In any case Google (and Hexus) will be you friends.

    More like this:

    1) Configure partitions a) 1Gb swap (0x82) b) xGB NTFS partition for vista c) remainder for root Ubuntu partition using reiserfs
    2) Install Vista
    3) Install Ubuntu
    4) Know the bootloader works - grub will boot just about anything from just about anywhere
    5) Realise Ubuntu is horrible and go for a better distro

Lovely, even more virulent Microsoft shenanigans. I never noticed this problem since I have two different volumes for both operating systems.

Yes indeed - I have posted a couple more links to my original post which describes ways round it - but in essence, if Vista doesn't see its own boot loader at Sector 1, it won't boot. Partition resizing looks to be an issue too. Simplest way round woud be to use virtualisation.

(I haven't looked into this in any depth, but I wonder if Vista takes a hash of sector 1 at install time and checks that as part of the boot process as some 'security' measure?)

Meh, it's nothing new, Microsoft has always shoved their crappy bootloader down people's throats, only before ntldr & friends didn't DRMise the MBR.

nope. nope. nope. resizing vista is fine as long as you have ntfsresize 1.13.1.1 or higher (e.g. ubuntu 7.04), and the bootloader thing is complete falsehood

linux alongside vista is as click-and-go as alongside xp.

    Re: Vista and now Linux

Thanks for clearing that up - I am not a Vista user.

But apart from apologies for being unduly alarmist, (but better safe than sorry!) the links I posted earlier do indicate that there is, or was, some problem (perhaps with earlier versions of Vista) when booting Vista from a different bootloader. Did these problems exist, or has Grubh been updated to fix the problem? Or did I just misunderstand the links (it was late )

Ok - Think I know how I confused myself (but hopefully no-one else)

    http://port25.technet.com/archive/20...M-Support.aspx

Which refers to Vista installations on a machine with a TPM chip where the boot record is hashed. (However this link does give a way to dual boot in such an instance)

Lesson to self - research fully before posting! - apologies to all on this thread

yes, as per the old rules (i.e. needing to have a grub mbr as a file on a windows filesystem, as it won't boot partition headers)

No, Windows loads grub, and grub boots Linux. That's how it has always been.

Just to clarify... I have used the Win NT boot loader to load Linux by copying parts of the Linux boot process to the Windows drive. I can't remember the details but this looks pretty much like what I did: http://www.tprthai.net/bootmgr.htm. I seem to recall reading that it still worked in XP.

I can't remember what happened after choosing 'Linux' from the Windows boot prompt but the link says it loads Lilo/Grub. This is what you are referring to, I assume?

I was just wondering, does Vista still allow this???

    Re: Vista and now Linux

You chainloaded grub or lilo, the OS loader part of Windows is completely incapable of loading the Linux kernel.

But anyway, it's better to use grub to manage all booting, it's able to boot just about anything, as well as chainloading windows partitions.
