    2gig or 4gig ?

That is the question,,, I just purchased a new computer that has a duo 3gig w/4gig of ddr2 800mhz ram on a fsb of 1333mhz and to me it seems to be faster then a machine w/inly 2gig.
@home I built a new one this year w/q6600 and 2gig of 1000mhz ram on the fsb of 1088, and it seems faster then my home unit.
Both have xp and the new one has a fresh hdd and the home unit has 2-3 500gig full( I know, shame on me for being a hoarder).
Does it really make a different because I would like to put a couple more sticks in the home unit???
    Tex

    Re: 2gig or 4gig ?

    yes.

    Especially on a quad core.

I went from 2 gig to 4 gig and the multi tasking improved massively.

SO did obvious stuff like making movies, mass photo editing etc.

But it also allows me to run entire games and still do folding@home, and voice comms and still Windows-Key out of the game and surf.

    I love it

Gotta be 4gig for a new build now. You can get by on 2gig, but who wants to?

Check out http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=121361 too, very cheap, not many left though.

I didn't think XP could address 4gig of memory or is my memory letting me down, lol

I think XP was limited to 2.8gig or so in original incarnation, but with SP2 and maybe a regfix it'll deal with about 3.2gig. Still loads.

DDR2 seems so cheap that whacking in 4gig seems perfectly reasonable, even if using a 32bit OS. Gives you a few more options for the future as well.

4gig for sure. Even if you don't use all of it now (32bit XP/Vista) you will later (Vista64)

    Re: 2gig or 4gig ?

Just on this subject of you want 4GB what is the best option 2x 2GB or 4x 1GB?

Will 4x 1GB sticks cause stability issues in dual channel mode or should it really be 2x 2GB?

2x2GB seems to have less compatibility problems and leaves room for more later. Though I'm not sure how much later you'll need 8Gig.

I've got 4 x 1gb and it's fine. TBH by the time I need more than that i'll be on a different type of memory anyway.

seems to work good w/the crysis demo, which by the way is gorgeous and quite destructible too. I spent the first time through the demo shooting down almost every palm tree in site and almost every bird that flew over head. WOW WEE
