    Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) and HD tune

I'm currently looking for a program that has the functions of HD Tune, but runs on Linux (Prefer Debian/Ubuntu), a gui for HDD SMART info would also help, without having to terminal "smrtctrl" every now and then to check the status of drives.

That aside does anyone have better alternative to mdadm?

    Thanks in advance~ ^^

hd tune ? not sure what you mean on that, what does it do and I'll give you the correct options. I assume you mean either something like hdparm or tunefs

for monitoring smart disks use some sort of monitoring tool in a dock such as gkrellm (there are many others)

mdadm - is THE tool for configuring software raid, now that raidtools is dead. There is no alternative. There alternative technologies, but thats a different matter and non that I would recommend.

Don't want to sound like some advertisement XD , HD tune is a program that allows detailed scanning of sectors of a drive, it can usually pick out a defect in a drive.

But what I need to the ability to deep scan a HDD for defects.

    Thanks ikonia ^^

as in physical defects, or file system defects ?

I know maxtor and a few others have binary compatible tools in their websites for a generic linux release for hardware scanning. its normally done per brand/make.

I can't think of any generic tools off the top of my head

Physical defects mainly, all my HDD are Samsung (I'm an avid Samsung spin point HDD fan), I'll go on the Samsung website later today and have a look.

    Thanks ikonia ^^
