Vista & McAfee Security Suite Questions

    Need some advice please

Have bought a Dell PC (for my Nephew) and Vista Home Premium is installed. Also installed is McAfee Security Suite (not sure if trial).

Spec - X2 3800, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, DVD RW, Media Card Reader. Have purchased separate Daewoo 19" Widescreen from Scan (for £95) as Dell wanted £176 for a 19" Widescreen

    1. My Nephew (and I) don't have a clue about Vista, I was wondering if I should uninstall it and install XP instead?

    2. There is some preinstalled "junk" so (if sticking with Vista) should I wipe the computer and reinstall the OS? I did see a BIG performance increase when I wiped a Dell laptop and reinstalled only the required drivers/programs.

    3. Will there be a big performance increase if I install XP?

    4. Does anyone know if McAfee on Vista is any good? Should I install the freebies instead (AVG Anti Virus/Zone Alarm Firewall)?

    Thank you.

Re: Vista & McAfee Security Suite Questions

Well it really does depend on what type of use your nephew is after, if he is just a regular home user then maybe sticking it out with Vista is not such a bad plan after all.

Although I expect the Vists Score to be not very high on this machine?

You'd see a great performance increase switching to XP with 2gb of Ram, it will feel much smoother and be a generally more pleasent experience.

The advice I give to most people in this case is "Dual Boot", that way he can still get to grips with Vista over time and have a OS which is quick and familiar available whenever required.

It's mostly surfing, nothing taxing as far as I know so I'll stick with Vista for the time being.

    Will uninstall McAfee though.
