USB (2.0) drivers in winXP Home SP2

The USB ports on my computer have always been a bit flaky - the centurian case in particular seems to have pretty bad connectors to the front ports. Consequently only one of the two works, and only for non-powered devices. However, the rear ports have been working, powered, just fine.

But recently I've been trying to use a USB flash drive and I'm getting Windows cannot recognise this device/device malfunction errors. The drive works fine on other computers.

Are there any drivers that I can try updating to help mass storage drives work better? I ran the chipset driver update again and it just told me USB drivers were already included in XP Sp2...

    Thanks in advance,

    kalniel

Re: USB (2.0) drivers in winXP Home SP2

    Welcome to my world!

I have four identical HP desktops, all running XP Pro SP2. Three work perfectly and one has completely non-functioning USB ports.

The very last thing on my long list of to dos is to reinstall the OS.

I've disabled and reenabled the ports (nothing changes), I've removed and let the OS reinstall the ports (but it wont), I've updated the drivers (but they don't), I've removed the drivers (and ended up having to use system restore), I've contacted HP support (har har) and on and on and on.

Have you checked the cable that runs from your motherboard to the front-mounted ports? Maybe that's the problem?

Well I've just bought the sandisk cruzer flash drive and just pop it in the USB port and winxp recognises it, erm but Vista wont (naughty Vista)......................another point:- dodgy ports in the front? I have no front USB ports so bought an extention cable and plugged it into the back, and leave the socket near the front of the case, this cost £2 off ebay.
2nd computer gigabyte P965ds3p, 7770 E2140@2.9ghz, corsair HX520 6 years stable, replaced now with E8400@3.9ghz and will overclock more when I'm bored.

That may affect the front ports, but I'm not sure why I still have problems with the rear specifically working with USB flash drives. Other USB peripherals (powered and unpowered) work fine.
