How do I do this in excel?

    Hi guys

If a box in a column has anything written in it, I need to be able to add up the amount of boxes that have something written in them.

So, a long long spread sheet, many pages long (down the page)

Each time I write something in one of the columns, no matter what it is, I want it to add to the total at the bottom.

If the column is 1000 long, and I write random notes in 24 of them, I need the number 24 at the bottom.

    How?

A quick and dirty way would be to have another column of cells run an IF on it's partner cell, so that if the cell had any value then it would display 1, while if it was blank 0. Then add that column up.

Just type =IF(C3="",1,0) into the cell and it will return a value of 1 should C3 have anything in it. Then just sum that column and you'll have your answer!

    there is an easier way
highlight the column, and right click on the bottom left corner (where the sum of highlighted cells normally appear) and select count

you got that the wrong way around it should be
    =IF(C3="",0,1)
    or equivalently
    =IF(C3<>"",1,0)

Find the autosum symbol on your tool bar (side ways M) and click on the tiny little arrow to the right of it which activates a drop down menu and then select - count
