I've always installed ZoneAlarm (basic) on XP and was trying to do the same with a new Vista PC. Got a BSOD so gave up installing ZoneAlarm.
Can someone please recommend another firewall?
Or should I stick with Windows firewall?
Thanks.

The Windows Firewall in Vista is pretty good. Are you directly connected to the internet? If not then there really isn't much point in using any other firewall (unless you don't trust people on your own LAN!)
Windows firewall is a very good one way firewall, it wont allow anything in but things may be allowed out.
It depends how much you are...well paranoid...if you are then maybe install a second firewall, ZoneAlarm 7.1 should work with Vista though![]()

I've always installed (or thought I was installing) a "better" firewall than the Windows one.
Vista x86.
ZoneAlarm (whilst installing) was the one that caused the BSOD. I rebooted and had another BSOD after a few minutes but I think it's now ok.
If you are sat behind a firewalled router then you only need to use the windows firewall (xp or vista). I'm always amused that people will spend £££ on security software suites etc when a £30 router will solve 90% of the issues.
(Add free AVG, spybot S&D, adaware, hijackthis, ccleaner and a drefragger and the other 10% are sorted too - disclaimer: as long as the user is a bit savvy)

I'm using PC Tools Firewall Plus, it offers all the features you'd expect but I would probably go back to Sunbelt/Kerio if they release a version for Vista...
While routers using NAT will protect the majority of users from direct probing attacks (provided it is configured correctly and there are no open inbound ports) the advantage of applications such as Kerio personal firewall and Zone alarm is that they will provide some protection against malware (particularly trojans) that might be inadvertantly downloaded from a compromised web site or in an e mail by flagging up enexpected outbound connections. Of course the user still needs some savvy not to automatically click "OK" without examining what service/application is requesting the outbound connection.
Not running as administrator for everyday tasks still remains one of the most important basic security precautions.
