    http:/// and no ping

    Hello chaps,
I was re-installing XP on a windows machine yesterday and am going to be finishing it off today.
One thing i did notice yesterday was that after I'd installed the ethernet drivers, I can connect to the Gateway fine, but can't Ping any websites or access them via IE. I just get a page akin to a 404, with "http:///" in the address bar. (Yep, 3 slashes)

Bit lost as I've never seen this one before, and google doesn't include symbols, so i cant search for that specific address.

    Any ideas?
    TIA!
    Steve

    Re: http:/// and no ping

If you try to use nslookup from a command prompt what do you see? I think I've seen something like this before and I remember nslookup just giving strange symbols when I tried to resolve something.

I can't remember off hand what the problem was, I've a feeling I just had someone reinstall the box but I'll have a look through my email and see what I can find.

    Re: http:/// and no ping

you can "ping" the gateway but is that set as your default route.

Check that your dhcp service has given you

a.) valid DNS servers that CAN be reached - as mentioned above you can check this with nslookup, or dig or other tools
b.) your default route is actually your gateway, you've said you can ping it, so your on the right network but that doesn't actually mean your dhcp or manual entry set it as the default gateway.
c.) The magical SP2 firewall. - make sure thats setup correct or disabled.
    It is Inevitable.....

    Re: http:/// and no ping

    Ikonia,

    a) After my failed attempt at using DHCP, I've setup a static IP to communicate with the router. I'm using NTLs DNS servers, as they're the only ones that I can always remember. I can ping them from the command line.
    b) I shall double check that the Gateway is set to the IP of the router!
    c) I've got a very large hunch that this is whats causing it, as it has given me endless amounts of problems before. I shall disable it pronto!

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm heading over there now, but should still be able to communicate through the MacBook!
