Re: Internet Security Suites
Kaspersky Internet Security gets my vote in regards to security software.
I've used most packages because we need to know the software in my line of work and I was that impressed with kaspersky I removed my older security software across my systems and rolled out the latest version.
Re: Internet Security Suites
I don't use an all over package for my security.
I use the following:
Virus - Avast for my virus checking (which I found superb as it even checks webmail!)
Firewall - Windows firewall and router firewall (have also be known to use Zonealarm)
Spybot - for preventative maintenance and removal of spyware & adware
No need to spend a penny in my opinion (well you can donate money to these worthy bits of software) using these three in conjunction has stood me in good stead.
Re: Internet Security Suites
I've got Kaspersky Internet Security 7 - like Lee I was impressed by it. I've got it on 5 PCs at home.
Thanks to a heads-up here I've also bought the licences from eBay, much cheaper and a very effective solution.
Re: Internet Security Suites
i would go for avast! antivirus (free!) great program that catches just about anything and updates about 10 times a day... so you know its always up to date, only down side the the annoying american accent that tells you its just updated
and sunbelt kerio personal firewall (again, free!) has both an idiot proof and advanced mode....
does just about everything
Re: Internet Security Suites
A couple of votes for Kaspersky so far, sounds and looks pretty good.
Thanks to the others for your suggestions, but it really has to be a "one application to rule them all" kind of thing for ease of use. Having 3 or 4 programs is better, I know, I use several myself, but for someone not quite so tech savvy, it can be confusing!
Re: Internet Security Suites
Kaspersky gets my vote too.
Re: Internet Security Suites
I use Kaspersky for AV, but have AVG as well. I paid for Kaspersky multi-machine licence, but AVG is the free version.
I add ZoneAlarm for firewall (as well as a hardware firewall), and SpyBot S&D and AdAware, though I've been less impressed recently with the latter.
Like some others have said, I prefer to use several picked and tuned applications rather than one "does it all" suite, because I've never found a suite I was convinced was the best option for several different functions.
Re: Internet Security Suites
I'd be interested in hearing of anyone's experiences with the new Eset security suite?

Apparently the firewall could do with a little tweaking, but it's very quickly become very popular. I'd have no hesitations in buying it myself, but I only use the AV.
Re: Internet Security Suites
Re: Internet Security Suites
AVG free for home pro for work
windows firewall/router for work zonealarm/router home
startup monitor and cpl Mike Lin's Home Page
Firefox with script and ad blockers
works for me

Agree totally.
I have used McAfee, Kaspersky, Norton, Panda and Avast.
Kaspersky is by far the best and not a system hog or intrusive.
Re: Internet Security Suites
i am on the 6 month free trial of kaspersky 7 but as soon as my license expires i will be renewing it.
only problem i have had is that it thinks that my creative installation cd for x-fi is a virus

That's not a false positive mate.

I agree, and I too use several programs (AVG, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, ZA and my Router's firewall), but as I said it's not for me, it's for someone who's not as "tech savvy" as myself and just wants some sense of security whilst writing e-mails and reading some web pages.
There's been quite a few positive votes for Kaspersky, and I admit it looks and sounds pretty good, so I may get that for them. :)
Thanks all!
Re: Internet Security Suites
I saw an advert for Norton security at PC world reduced to half price from around £50 to £25 and I laughed so hard I had to be taken to casualty.
Now that I have recovered I can post.
1. Get them a decent router with a firewall. @£30+. This will save most hassles for a home PC/network.
2. Turn on windows firewall.
3. Install your favourite antivirus (free AVG - paid NOD32 imo)
4. Show them how to use Adaware 2007, Spybot S&D. It's not that hard nowadays.
5. Ensure they don't run internet apps as Administrator.
Which is equivalent to what you, I and many others do, so why are these people so special?
The problem with less "tech savvy" people is that they believe that if they install software X they are immediately protected from all nasties regardless of what they do. It's akin to buying a car with a 5 year guarantee and have it fail after 2 because no oil has been put in or the tyres have not been kept at the correct pressure.
Some education is ALWAYS required.
There is no reason why the less tech savvy person can't learn a little bit. Afterall, a router with firewall, free anti-virus and windows firewall aswell as running them as non admin will do 99.9% of the job.
I've set many friends and family up with that sort of setup and they've never had issues. They run the antivirus and malware stuff once every two weeks and it's all tickety boo.

For Christmas no doubt. What an awesome gift. Akin to giving someone a home pregnancy testing kit.
Re: Internet Security Suites
Kaspersky IS. There is/was a free 6 months trial of it in addition to the 30 days, and scan normally have the OEM's at £10/£11 a go for a year...
Needs quite a bit of tweaking IMO or it does cause some resource issues at start-up. Otherwise, you are always 100% sure it's working cause it constantly bothers you ;)
