BSOD on start up in vista..... eek

OK, heres the blue screen I get:

    "STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}

The registry cannot load the hive (file)

    \systemroot\system32\config\SOFTWARE

    or its log or alternate.

It is corrupt, absent, or not writeable."

and then it preforms a memory dump and restarts. After restart it gives me the normal options of booting in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with comand promt, and last working config. All of these options yield the same result as above rolling round in an endless loop of crashing and restarting until I pull the plug out of the wall!

So in short, I need help

I'm just really wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if they could get around it without having to reinstall windows, which I know will probably need to be done but I really cant afford to spend a few days getting everything setup again as I have a lot of work to do at uni.

    Thanks

Memory issue I suspect.... How many modules you got in there, can you remove one?

Re: BSOD on start up in vista..... eek

I got two 1gb sticks in there, so I will try and remove each of them and try them in all the slots.

Something I forgot to mention, but I dont know if its related, is that the reason I restated the computer and this started happening was because I couldnt open any office apps, they kept coming up with errors and closing telling me that I needed to restart. Dont know if this helps...

Memtest86+ is your friend, let it run one night, and be amazed!

Re: BSOD on start up in vista..... eek

ok, iv tried putting each stick of ram in each dimm and the same thing keeps happening, i also removed all other components except the graphics card and the hard drives and still nothing so either its both sticks have gone, or the motherboard has gone or its something else.

im really stuck on this one here

as TheAnimus says - run memtest. (Saves all the trouble of unplugging components needlessly)

Re: BSOD on start up in vista..... eek

Well, I think its time for an update...

As suggested by TheAnimus and peterb, ran memtest86+ for what turned out to be over 20 hours and no errors were found. I ran it at all the default settings and just let it get on with its self expecting for it to tell me that the memory was shagged and then was surprised when nothing came of it.

So I thought to myself that if memtest reckons the memories fine then it must just be a corruption in windows and that it may even be my hard drive that is the problem. In the vain hope that it was a small error in the windows start-up I ran the repair option from the vista disk. Although this did find a problem and fixed it I would now get another BSOD on start-up, albeit a different one to before, and no windows load.
Pretty mythed by now, I went ahead and did a reinstall of windows to start afresh and to my pleasure it seemed to work. No issues with the install and everything loaded up as expected. (on a side note it seems vista can now do a reinstall over the top of and old install and keep all of the files in the program files, users, windows and program data folders and move them to a windows.old folder so nothing is lost!)

Now here’s where the problems started up again. After 2 days of use as normal, installing all the latest drivers and some apps so that I can get some use out of the computer again and with no warnings what-so-ever, I get a big blue screen when I'm just sitting there with the desktop up. Then after restarts and loading into windows every time I'm getting I/O errors in the memory. I'm sure now this must be the memory and that the problems I was earlier suffering before the reinstall must too have been related to the memory like was said but which memtest failed to find.

So I run memtest again and it runs the first loop finding no errors, but as I'm sure there is errors I play with the settings. By telling it to probe the memory for the structure (I think that’s what I did) I begin to get pages and pages of errors and the error counter is going up by 5000 at a time. Now I'm not too sure if this is just because I did something wrong or if it really is that the memory is in a long process of dieing but I've had enough! It is time to bite the bullet and get some new sticks, which, luckily, are very cheap at the moment.

Reading this back tells me there isn’t really much point in telling you good folk all this drivel but I needed to vent and I just hope that my nonsense is useful to someone.
