    OpenOffice.. whats the catch?

Having tried office 2007 i've decided I hate it apart from a couple of nice touches I can certainly live without. So i've just downloaded and installed openoffice from sun and it's perfect on first glance.

Are there any drawbacks I should be aware of?

compatibility with MS formats may not be 100%, especially with macros

Not to worried about macro's, it will be mainly word/writer and presentations.

I may continue to use powerpoint for the presentations. I'll have a play see if I have any problems.

Consitent formatting between oo and word is pretty hard, oo calc is about 3 years behind excel, if you ony want it for basic stuff there really isnt one.

    Re: OpenOffice.. whats the catch?

Its free, its ideal for people who dont need the extra functionality of Office, or who cant justify the CRAZY price attached (or dont want the implications of going down other routes).

    Re: OpenOffice.. whats the catch?

I have run complex documents & presentation through OO, but agree that the oo spreadsheet is not so good (or maybe I use more Excel features) however Gnumeric is the other Open source spreadsheet & many macros work - certainly its much closer.

    Re: OpenOffice.. whats the catch?

I would have gone the Open Office route if we weren't able to get MS Office through work for £18. The cheap price is the only reason I've stuck with it.

and you get 3 licenses for that.

But GNumeric is actually almost useable, i don't know any one who finds the OO ss any use at all.

I would say its not 3 years behind ms office, but in fact 12.

Here is why, excel 97 had the last defination of the SDK, VBA and everything else. Word got a much better API and VBA. Little functionalality has been added in the last 10 years (new UI, 'smart' tags).

But OO still hasn't got to the useful features of 97 yet, its still struggeling with 95. Its not lightweight enough for a quick wordpad type editor, and not useful enough for writing your non-maths dissertation up in (not getting into a pro latex rant here...).
