Declare extra RAM as a RAM drive?

I was just reading this story about dropping RAM prices and this statement really caught my attention.

Price of DDR2 tumbles again - The INQUIRER

'Now, there is use for this even you're still on 32-bit WinXP or Vista, that use only around 3GB: simply, declare the upper 5GB of that RAM as a RAM drive that, during the system use, has the whole XP and apps loading to and from there, saving you quite a bit of time'

Now how does that work? 32-bit XP/Vista - 8Gb ram - 3ish usable - the rest as halfway there from hard disk.

Where would you declare such a thing? Has anyone used/is using such a setup and is it any good?

    like this?

mm.. nahh. now if gigabyte would get that DDR2 SATA300 i-RAM out then that would be damn useful

    aha!
yeah something like this, i'll do a seach for xp and vista stuff.
even if you have 4gb for a 32bit operating system - might as well use the portion of the ram that isnt used! that could be over half a gig, so enough for a few programs.

enough for a few programs that need to be reinstalled every time you restart the comp , its volatile storage so when the comps power goes so does the data... the i-RAM gets around this by incorporating a battery.

i would try using it for a swap disk first.. but really whats the point? you already have so much ram that the swap disk is pretty much unused.

seems like a solution without a problem to me

As well as something that doesn't cost more than a motherboard, ram, and a HDD would help too.

Oh yes, on a side note, you can get the source code for the Ram Disk driver and set whatever size of ram disk you want to allocate before you compile (should work ok with VC++ 2005 express edition providing you have the driver development kit installed).. The driver should work without issue with up to 2GB.

Fair point think you could buy a hell of allot of storage for that price.
