    Backup the drive

My friend stuffed up his laptop so I want to do a fresh install of Vista. His laptop (Samsung R70) doesn't come with a recovery disk and the Samsung Utilities doesn't come with any software to make recovery disks.

Therefore, just to be on the safe side, I want to backup his drive before I do a fresh install.

I know acronis but is there a free/open source software that is good?

    Linux dd command (simplest)

    or

g4u - Harddisk Image Cloning for PCs

    or

Self Image - The FREE (and open source) hard drive imaging utility for Windows

can't comment on which is best or easiest to use.
