    Installing Vista hints and tips

As i'll be doing my first ever install of Vista 64-bit soon, I am trying to gather any gotchas to make the install go smoothly.

So far I have downloaded every Vista driver that I can think of that I will be needing for my hardware/periperals.

I also know that I should only use 2GB of RAM in the system to do the initial install.

Are there any other gotchas that I need to be aware of?

Re: Installing Vista hints and tips

4gb for initial install worked for me first time (64)

The only real gotcha I had was my on board sound triggered a BSOD as the bundled drivers (realtek) sucked so much (solution: disable on board sound to get past BSOD and watch as vista magically tells you where to get drivers all by itself).

Re: Installing Vista hints and tips

I just installed vista 64bit last night and it went flawlessly first time. Just make sure you dl the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard, extract them first if they come in .exe form, and what i did was use a memory stick and put them all onto that so that during install of vista i was able to load the drivers from that

So far the only issues ive had have been with lack of 64 bit drivers for some of my old stuff.. and also a few apps not liking 64bit vista..

Did you install the motherboard drivers _during_ the install of Vista? If so, was the USB stick detected that early on? If it was then I have a 4GB USB stick and can put a lot of stuff on there.

You can install your raid drivers from it so I can't see any reason why not.

    RAID drivers...have them ready.

If you use Wireless Networking make surer you install you wifi card FIRST before anything else or it may not be picked up.

Do you need RAID drivers even if you're not going to be using RAID with your HDDs?

Nope, heck I didn't even need drivers with Intel Matrix RAID on Vista
