just gone and deleted some files i needed with the shift button.. and it seems to have deleted a couple of folders which i need!
ive had a quick look online and they all seem to be pay for software
any software suggestions?
Fistly, stop using the disk that you have deleted the files on. The data is still there - you have deleted the opointers to it. therefore the disk space currently occupied by the data you want has been marked as free and so be be reallocated and the data overwritten.
What file system is it?
(if it NTFS a google search found this - you may find others NTFS Undelete — free, easy to use undelete software )

Ouch, this is exactly why I have a file recovery solution already in place on my system for recovering accidently deleted files.
I had a bad experience once, where I accidently deleted chapters of my undergraduate final year project and was too late to recover it (probably something overwrote it by the time I installed the recovey software and searched).
A good data protection plan will also reduce or negate trips to the backups for recovering important, deleted files.
