    Spam filter for Exchange 2k7

Any suggestions?, Inherited MimeSweeper 5.2 for exchange and think its one of the worst unreliable and flakey bits of software i've seen. Its corrupted its database more times than I care to remember, i'v e rebuilt the machine twice, and now i've finally got the budget to move to Exchange 2007 to support some of the new telephony applications that our Avaya telephone system supports with Exchange 2007 I really want to put something new in place to resolve the spam filter.

Anyone using anything internally, going to message labs for me is a too big a ££££ compared to inhouse technologies. Even if i'd like to.

    Thanks

Each 2007 has its own built in anti spam filter, though if its not many, many times better that the non whitelisting one on 2003 Sp1 and 2003 Sp2 then its still cr... rubbish.

Brightmail does the trick for us. Don't be put off by it being a Symantec product, it seems they didn't do their usual thing when they acquired Brightmail - they didn't completely ruin the product.

Price wise, we're paying something like £4k/year for upto 499 mailboxes and the results are very good. It's blocking something like 1.2million junk emails a month.

The only downside is that it hooks into Sendmail so your internet facing mail servers needs to be Sendmail. Brightmail hooks into it using a milter and then you tell it what to do with the emails (clean or otherwise). I'll hook into an LDAP server to verify addresses so you won't have any NDR's being sent out of Exchange for non existent email addresses.

Management is a doddle, it's all web based and you only need to setup a few variables and you can then pretty much forget about it.

A quick look at my servers show the UK one has blocked 35million and the one in France has blocked 30.5million, that represents about 95% of all the emails received.

You could also use Symantec Mail Security for Exchange; we use it with 2K3 here, and that has basic filtering using DNS blacklists, some Bayesian filtering, as standard. They also offer an enhanced Premium anti-spam service which enables additional filters. Cuts down on a LOT of spam even just using the DNS blacklisting. That said, GFI's stuff is also VERY VERY good; we use FaxMaker and MailArchiver here.
