Dear Old Fool :-)
What can Acronis do that the 'free' version can't?
I would like to be able to clone partitions rather than whole drives.

If by the 'Free Version' you mean the Acronis trial download - well just about everything usefull!
Check out the Acrons website for details, but the Windows backup / restore capability is highly restricted and for demo purposes only, and the boot from CD to take Image / Restore Image does not actually work - if it did no one would buy it!
I only use the Boot from CD (Recovery) aspects to take Images of the perfect clean install - updated from time to time as necessary. I don't actually use the Windows backup facility - so it has never actually been installed on my system. This way I can get back to a fresh install clean state in 15 minutes instead of many many hours.
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.
Thanks.
Looks as if the Seagate/Maxtor version might be best for me atm - so long as the Maxtor HD keeps going (it's currently got XP Pro and 3 distros of Linux on it).
