Whats Vista doing with my HDD???

This is really starting to get on my nerves!
After about lets say between 5-30min of using the PC and even if im not doing any thing the HDD will go nuts!

It will buzz away like I'm copying a massive file to it or some thing.... even when im not doing/running any programs?

I have found that every time upon checking that is the same file that is being written/read... what is this ???

Sounds like indexing or superfetch..happens on my HTPC too..ended up disabling superfetch when watching tv.

Superfetch kicks in when there's plenty of free ram after youve closed lots of apps. Pay attention to "cached memory" and "free" under physical to see that happening.

As for the activity, shadow copy, system restore checkpoints, and indexing.

Vista also defrags constantly in the background if so configured.

I've noticed my HDD clunking away as well with Vista. I've disabled indexing but it still does it. I have 4GB RAM and noticed that nearly all of it is used for caching something off the HDD. Take a look at the memory figures below:



Now my HDD isn't being accessed. Bliss...

any unused ram is a wasted resource.

oh yes also i heard, that vista eats up your ram when you dont use it to speed up the os and holding certain programs or files in memory that it has predicted you will use. when you start filling up the rest of the ram and you request more it will free it for you.

^^ This is true. Vista does use a lot of RAM, but it makes good use of it, and releases it back (usually) as needed.

I still cant get it to stop accessing my HDD. I have tried disabling shadowing in services and disabled system restore but still no joy..... oh and also indexing.

Any ideas Please

The system volume information folder stores data about rollback points for when you want to restore the system to a known point in time. I don't know what else it contains. However as Vista is (at heart) a disk operating system (as is every other OS!), albeit with a lot of bells and whistles tacked onto it soif the computer is operating OK just let it get on with it and do its thing.
