Who is happy with Vista 64-bit?

Despite reading many horror stories and lots of advice suggesting that I stick with Windows XP, I decided to go ahead and instal Vista 64-bit on my newly built PC. After several weeks I am more than happy with it. I have had no compatibility issues and everything works flawlessly.

I have many 32-bit apps installed (eg. Office 2003). Some require setting up to be XP SP2 compatible but this only takes a few seconds (for example, HD Tach).

So, for those that have bitten the bullet and gone with Vista 64-bit, what are you experiences? Were any concerns justified?

Re: Who is happy with Vista 64-bit?

I've been using Vista 64 on a desktop for a while, it serves me very well. The only problem I have is Windows Media Centre stuttering, I don't know however if that is a 64bit problem or just a Media Centre problem.

Other than that, no problems. Sometimes there are pieces of software that come out and only support 32 bit platforms until they're udpated shortly after, that's a bit of a pain.

I definately notice the performance boost though, my x64 system uses 4GBs of Ram and the boost in speed is very much appreciated.

Still using 32 bit at the mo, but as soon as I can pull another £100 together for a 64 bit license (I bought OEM) I think I'll be making the jump. I now have 4Gb of RAM, and nothing I use seems to have any issues with being run in a 64 bit environment.

I've been using Vista x64 for months, apart from the nvidia farce, totally problem free.

Also splash for a few quid MS will send you the x64 DVD, should be no problem even with an OEM license.

Re: Who is happy with Vista 64-bit?

I've been using Vista Ultimate 64 bit since the day of release on MSDN so thats 13 months now.

I can say that the first 3 months or so were hell as the drivers from nVidia and Creative were absolute rubbish (and they shouldve been ashamed).

After the first 3 months though, the OS has been superb and i wouldnt go back/use XP again if you paid for it.

    Interesting...

EDIT - nope, as I thought. Just tried to obtain alternative media for my 32 bit OEM Ultimate and Computer Says No - there are no offers available.

I've been using it since June time, and apart from X-Fi issues, it has been totally fine.

I use the YOUPAX X-Fi drivers, and my issues have now gone away.

Re: Who is happy with Vista 64-bit?

Must say, it's been the most stable release out of redmond yet, XP was a joke before SP1. The only thing (that hasn't been microsoft's (or the operating systems') fault) is the driver situation with nvidia and creative. It does chew up a fair chunk of HDD space though.

Re: Who is happy with Vista 64-bit?

Thus far Vista 64bit's been working fine for me, and I've not had any real issues with the nVidia drivers either, apart from one bizarre glitch in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. where the grass can't make up it's mind where it wants to me

Re: Who is happy with Vista 64-bit?

I installed Vista 64bit about 6 months ago with people saying the same thing to me, I hunted down some PCI Linkysys WiFi drivers, as that was the only thing I believed I would have a problem with.

Installed Vista, it automatically setup my WiFi card too and has been running smoothly ever since. I still dual boot into XP, as I havent got round to installing all my apps across.

All in all its very good

Re: Who is happy with Vista 64-bit?

Thanks for the replies everyone. It's good to hear some positive stories about Vista 64. I just made sure I spent one afternoon downloading all the Windows Updates and the OS has been trouble-free.

I did do a lot of planning before going ahead with the Vista 64 install - essentially getting a copy of every single driver that I would need, from the low-level hardware drivers from Intel for example, to the drivers for my printers, webcams, etc. I copied them onto a DVD, an external USB hard drive and a USB stick just to ensure that I had a means of loading them!

I found that creating a simple spreadsheet listing each hardware component/accessory and whether I had the required 64-bit driver made things more manageable during the build.

Like others, I can't see myself going back to XP now. The performance of Vista 64 with 4GB RAM is very impressive indeed. After a cold boot into the OS, IE7 (64-bit) loads in under a second when I click on the icon. Office 2003 apps (Word, Excel, etc) load in under 2 seconds. I've also found the benefits of apps running on different cores to greatly help with overall system performance.

That sucks, they must have changed it. Your COA should work if you can get hold of a disc though(well used to).

I've been using Vista Home Premium 64 bit since September and besides a couple of driver issues (Creative X-Fi and a Logitech Cam) it's been on the whole a good experience.

Re: Who is happy with Vista 64-bit?

I had Vista 32Business on my wok machine for a while, got random network performance, stuttering in media player then I killed it, refused to boot so went back to XP.
There is another Vista32B machine here at work and the guy likes it, he has however commented on the fact its getting slower and slower in recent weeks, perhaps MS releasing patches that are reducing the performance further so when SP1 comes out it seems to boost performance 20x

I also had Viats64U on my home machine, I really did try to like it but after just under a month it had to come off, I was getting lower FPS in games, my XFi didnt work properly, random network performance, system seemed sluggish.

I have no doubt in the end Vista will be better that XP but for now thats not the case IMHO, it needs all the crap stripping out of it and it needs tweaking a bit but it'll come good in the end....
