Question Annoying Problem with DEP on Vista

Basically, I was installing Adobe Master Suite CS3 on my machine...it gets about half way through (when it's installing shared components), and i keep getting a message popping up saying DEP has stoped msiexec from working? i don't get it...i tried to add msiexec to the exception list, and it's teling me it's not allowed to be added.

Im running Vista, and i have installed Adobe Master Suite on this machine before, like only the other day?! only thing i can think of it i formated my whole drive and started fresh...but what difference can that make from when i installed then, and now?

    any ideas?

Re: Annoying Problem with DEP on Vista

DEP is the bane of my life, I've got some telephony programs that have multiple services and items that run that do no list what they are activating behind the scene. So while it appears as something like in your case MSIExec, there are potentially many other things that are going on.

I've personally found DEP very very annoying on server grade machines and we've now just turned the whole thing off.

I suppose you have tried temporarally turning DEP off, and when you did you rebooted before trying to install your sw again.

Are there any others on the adobe fora having the same problems. Adobe must know about this issue, unless it is user specific (and only occurs on a full moon and if you dye your hair blue), if not, let them know.

DEP has always been a pain in the bum. I assume there is way to turn it off completely in Vista as you can in XP?

Re: Annoying Problem with DEP on Vista

hmm well guys, I tried a few things, turning off UAC, running the installation as administrator...i couldn't find a way to turn DEP off all together (im not sure where i can do that)...only thing i can think of that is casuing this, is that these recent windows updates have done something to DEP to make it cancel the installation.

in the end i re-installed windows and installed master suite WITHOUT updating windows vista first, and then updated vista later. and it worked.

Re: Annoying Problem with DEP on Vista

I'm glad you have it sorted it now, bit of a hasstle though just to get your sw to install.

This is from the WindowsSecrets email (https://windowssecrets.com/info/),
    on how to turn DEP on, so I assume, reversing the steps will turn it off (can't try it, don't have vista);

    How to turn on DEP

Both Vista and XP let you turn on DEP globally, while allowing you to make exceptions for applications that have problems. To do that, you need to return to the Performance Options dialog:

In Vista, click Start, type SystemPropertiesDataExecutionPrevention, and press Enter. Click Continue in the User Account Control dialog box.

In both XP and Vista, select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.

Re: Annoying Problem with DEP on Vista

DEP is very crude in how it suspects an imbalance is happening.

Data Execution Prevention - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are issues that happen when an app is using .data or .data? to execute code, whilst this is 'bad' from a purist design point of view, it can be quite handy to squeeze some extra tricks out of the platform, the problem is its bad because in the future when something like DEP comes along, or CPUs better optomise certain areas, bad things like this happen.

Problem is try telling Adobe their software is badly written, they don't give a hoot. Just look at acrobat reader for instance.

Re: Annoying Problem with DEP on Vista

You damn right, it's just annoying me even more now, because im trying to install the same software on my laptop? it's been on there before in the past, last night i got the same DEP issues.

i even tried turning DEP OFF, from the cmd...and guess what, its still gave me an DEP error?! i don't even know how...even when the DEP options were grayed out because they were supposed to be disabled...

again i had to recover system to factory defaults to install the SW.

and ur right about adobe, they can't give a str8 answer.
