Can't run Linux SMP - what about multiple instances?

    Hi,
As above, I can't run the SMP Linux client as I'm booting from a LiveCD (none 64bit). Presumably if I have a quad core box, the next best thing is to run 4 instances of F@H in their own directories?

Re: Can't run Linux SMP - what about multiple instances?

I found te SMP client didn't seem to run taht well on Linux (using an AMD athlon 64)

However I just opened up a console window and logged on to that and ran the FAH client (the beta version) once without the SMP option, but it in the background and then ran it again - so it seems to be running two instances. One WU of 5,000,000 steps is doing about 1% every 15 minutes, the other WU of 1,500,000 steps is doing about 1% every 40 minutes (presumably because its doing more system stuff). I am only using one directory.

Re: Can't run Linux SMP - what about multiple instances?

If you wish to run multiple instances when you set up the client in the advanced settings the is a "Machine number" just make sure each client has a different number and it should all go fine

As to SMP in Linux being bad/slow talk to DiectHex as he is of the impression it couldn't be any easier and is faster (at the same clock speed) than running under windows.

Oh and GPU client is better in a points per day than CPU if you happen to have a Radeoon x1600 or higher in there! (and the drivers are available...)

I was under the (possibly mistaken!) impression that the SMP option worked best on the Intel platform rather than AMD. (Nvidia GPU!)

Re: Can't run Linux SMP - what about multiple instances?

the SMP client for linux is 64-BIT ONLY

you can run the (32-bit) single core client in multiple directories, but be sure to change the machineid setting in advanced settings when running the config (i.e. one machineid per instance)

would make sense. f@h is using a real-world chemistry code, and HPC is one area where the superiority of core microarchitecture shows

Re: Can't run Linux SMP - what about multiple instances?

Thanks DH! I am running FC6 64 bit on the AMD platform. I downloaded the 64bit FAH client, ran two instances in one directory and it seemed to run two WUs. So I changed config, ran one instance in separate directories - but it is running the same WU twice - and the log in each directory shows exactly the same information! When these WUs have finished I'll try the SMP option again.

EXACTLY the same? md5sum the input files. same core != same WU

Re: Can't run Linux SMP - what about multiple instances?

Not had a chance to MD5 the input files, but there are only two processes running FAH_core81.exe - the logs in the two directories both report the same protein.

Looking atthe workunitinfo.txt files gives the same protein names, but different tags (and I changed the client.cfg files bedfore starting so that one had machine=1, the other machine=2)

Just had a look for the input files - where are they? The work directory doesn't appear to contain them)

i think it's the .arc file in the work directory - that's the main one anyway.
