    Need new wallet software

I've used Ilium Software's eWallet for a few years now and was wondering if anyone has experience of similar software that's more recent.

Essentially I want to be able to store all my credit card details, Web site details, store cards, frequent flyer cards, serial numbers etc, in a single application on my PC. I'm happy to pay up to around £20 for the software. Obviously it will need to be secure!

    Re: Need new wallet software

I've been using the freeware portable EssentialPIM on a usb stick for a while and like it. They do the Pro and Free versions for desktop and portable, you can trial the Pro if you want - and you'll probably be wanting that for the advanced encryption and the rest of the added features. Vista compatible, whether it's 64 bit Vista compatible, dunno, if the Free version is, you could stick it on the freeware thread. Can't see it offering much different from what you already have though. Worth looking at anyway.

^ Thanks for that. I checked out EssentialPIM and it's not quite what I was after. I already have Outlook 2003 as my PIM. I wanted something that could store my credit card details, logon details (eg. routers, bridges), Web site logon details, etc. As I mentioned I already have Ilium's eWallet but wanted to try something new.

In the end I've downloaded a trial copy of Password Depot 3. This seems the to provide similar functionality to Ilium's eWallet and appeard to be quite secure.

Anyone interested can download a trial copy from here:

Password Depot: Powerful password manager for all your passwords! That way you can securely manage all of your passwords.

It works out around 15GBP for a licensed copy.

    Looks nifty.

Check the open sauce KeePass Password Safe out before you buy, forgot all about it and I've never actually got round to trying it. Let us know what you think if you try it.

I do have to ask, why on EARTH would you want an application that collects all your data into one easy to steal place? Also, how can you trust the vendors to not include a little piece of code that gets the program to send off your information to their servers for "market research" or even blantant theft.

    Re: Need new wallet software

I use KeePass (installed and portable versions) as there's no way I'm going to remember all of the random strings I use. I recently had my eBay account hacked which forced me to take more care in the complexity of passwords I chose (the ones I was using were pretty random alphanumeric strings but were memorable); KP has a built in, configurable generator that doesn't report home (i.e. it's not spyware).

@Lucio ... you can become too paranoid and not store personal data anywhere including on your PC. I'm not prepared to take that approach as part of the PCs task is to make my life easier. Then again, with official agencies losing data for you, you might as well make everything public and post it in the local paper. So long as I feel I've done enough to secure my data, I'm content.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good
scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

Any security system employed comes down to a level of personal risk assessment - how much risk will you accept, and what the consequences are of that risk happening.

I use encryption to protect sensitive data on the PC - only one complex pass phrase to remember! (Plus of course all the standard security precautions - seperate user account locked down with low privileges etc, admin account only used for admin tasks etc etc)

Depends on your own risk assessment and your need for storing information in one place. You might have a crap memory with over a hundred things to remember and a need for quick access to relevant information, makes sense to put it under one convenient roof, in which case something like a secure password manager / secure PIM would be useful to you. Personally I'd have it on a usb stick and if the stick goes missing I detonate it via remote control.

    It's a valid point.

heh. Comodo's software firewall is a cracking freeware product atm. I've only just noticed they have something called Comodo i-Vault free secure password manager. Well worth a nose around I reckon.
