    Video codecs.

What codecs do you have installed?

    I have:

    K-Lite Mega pack (latest)
    Coreavc
    HDTV pump

Anything better than these/should I replace them?

    Re: Video codecs.

I don't like codec packs, the can really screw things up. You usually get things you don't seen either.

ffdshow, RealAlternative and QTAlternative are my favourites.

Not had to do anything with HD so far.

    Can't stand codec packs either.

XviD, Quicktime Alternative, Real Alternative, x264, DivX (encoding only, as their Web Player rocks and I use it on our school website over WMV) and then have VLC for anything that doesn't play with the above. It hasn't been used yet.

    Re: Video codecs.

K-Lite Codec Pack on Windows, ordinarily codec packs screws things up, but K-Lite seems to work well as long as you don't let it do fancy auto stuff like 'check/fix for broken codecs'.
With Gentoo I let portage pull in various codecs as dependencies, as well as the w32codec package.

    p.s. gstreamer sucks :/

there's nothing inherently wrong with it, it's a reasonable attempt to make a directshow-style graph system on *nix

plus, you may or may not have noticed gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg on the list - which means any gstreamer app is happy playing anything supported by ffmpeg's implementation of libavcodec. which is pretty much everything ever

    Re: Video codecs.

    In the spirit of directhex:

    Code:
    $ dpkg -l gstreamer0.10\* | grep ^ii
ii gstreamer0.10-alsa 0.10.10-4 GStreamer plugin for ALSA
ii gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg 0.10.1-7 FFmpeg plugin for GStreamer
ii gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs 0.10.10-4 GStreamer plugin for GnomeVFS
ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-base 0.10.10-4 GStreamer plugins from the "base" set
ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-good 0.10.4-4 GStreamer plugins from the "good" set
ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly 0.10.4-5 GStreamer plugins from the "ugly" set
ii gstreamer0.10-x 0.10.10-4 GStreamer plugins for X11 and Pango
ffmpeg and w32codecs handle just about everything - I've yet to find something they won't play.

    Re: Video codecs.

Combined Community Codec Pack is all you need. It's a coec pack but a proper one without a million different things.
To that I add Quciktime and Real Alternative.
