    Does this look ok?

Hi folks, I'm currently working on a new version of a website I run - and I've got a basic version of v2.0 up justnow, located here; ryansharpracing.com

Formatting and the like still needs tweaking I think, but last night I thought it looked quite good, and now i'm not so sure - does it look reasonable in terms of how it looks, or is it a bit bland/boring?

I had to change it, as it seemed to be getting awfully similar to andypriaulx.com in the early stages, so I've tried to steer away from that slightly.

p.s. ignore the valid CSS/XHTML images, that was true 2 days ago, when I'd just done the template!

    opinions/suggestions welcome

    Re: Does this look ok?

Difficult to tell really as there is only one page (or are the links at the side supposed to work?).

Nice and clean though, looks profesional, which is good

    Re: Does this look ok?

Yeah, there's only one page justnow - I've spent the whole weekend getting the one page looking right (along with various h1/2/p styles and classes), so that when I go to make the other pages all that stuff is done already.

I'll get some more pages up tonight if I have time and then it might better

    Re: Does this look ok?

    Looks pretty good,

I think maybe the white space could do with being re-thunked, but I guess by the content you haven't completed that kind of thing yet.

I would maybe have made the border/padding around the text area, and h1, a little bigger, they do seem a little close to the edge.

I would maybe separate the navigation from the two small car images on the right, either with some more space, or some kind of separator image. Again just preference on use of space. I think a bit more would make it look less cluttered, but maybe that's just the resolution. (I'm on 1680x1050)

One final thing is that I generally don't like the two pixel bordered navigation and maybe would have done that with one pixel, possible with a slightly brighter colour for the links when hovered on. Really just nit picking to be honest looks good overall.

PS. Ignore my crappy sites below historic work really :]

    Re: Does this look ok?

The padding for h1 will stay the same I think, I'll just set a text-indent: x; value aswell, which will move it further from its margin.

The p text will need to be modified though, it does seem a bit close to the left edge.

I'll try the thinner border when I get home, and I've got a plan for the images under the menu that will add a bit more (mainly) white space, which shall be done tonight

Cheers for the suggestions, all very much appreciated

    Re: Does this look ok?

Yeah, the spacing is all off. I'd have a big white border around the whole thing, up from the two pixel border you've got. Or maybe a big white border at the top and bottom, with the thin border left and right. ATM it looks unbalanced.

Then I'd bring all the text further into the main body space, so it's not so lined up with the header and footer graphics. The Header Text and the body text should be further seperated by indention.

Pull in the letter spacing on your body text. It looks way too spread out. If I were you I'd have the column a lot narrower. At the moment it's too spread out, your eye doesn't know where to rest when the page first opens. Maybe work on the content and break it up into different header topics, give the user something to scan, with a few options of where to go.

Stick a 1px border round that body picture, and give it a subtitle. See how news.bbc.co.uk does it and copy them.

I like the positioning of the menu, but your menu elements need more padding so the text has more space. And maybe use a different font. Again see what the BBC use and copy that, you can't beat it for legibility.

Get rid of those two graphics underneath the menu. Maybe find a couple of logos from the sponsors, make them 20% transparant and have them cropped off page. Fills space without detracting from the main page.

    Hope it helps.

Not a huge fan of the black gradient BG personally.

    Re: Does this look ok?

Ooh, I've just shown it to a few folks here at work, and in the process of doing so noticed that IE6 draws it funny - so I've had to take 5px off the content div width.

I shall try many of these suggestions tonight, see what it looks like - yamangman, would you prefer an all white/black/other color background - or something altogether different?

    Re: Does this look ok?

    Right, I've finally got round to spending another day on this - here's where its at right now;
    ryansharpracing.com|home

I've shifted stuff about, the menu is now on the left, and a right sidebar has been kept for the sponsor logos etc, as suggested by ibm (cheers, looks good I think ).

The header/footer images need redoing, as I think it needs a decent header logo and I'm no good with The GIMP/Paint so I can't make a half decent one at all.

Apart from that, I think its a definte improvement over the previous version, perhaps some more fiddling about with colors is needed - but the next major task for the site (along with adding content!) is to find a tutorial that helps me work out how to get PHP to read text from a comma-delimited plain text file (I dont have the means to have any DB running behind the site, so it needs to be from a file) - and then I can get the news stuff going!

    Cheers,
    David
