Question Direct x 10 on Xp, whats the latest?

Hi people , so while im watin for my direcx 10 card to come, i wondered what is the latest on the emerging rumours of being able to play directx 10 games on xp, instead of forking out for vista (dirty business push by Microsoft).
There is a site called "The alky project" which claims they have reversed engineered directx 10 to work on XP, you can read more if you search "alky project" and choose the "Techspot website" result.
Wondered if anyone has tried this or know more about it?
I hate Vista and would hate it on my pc just for games sake's.

Download DirectX 10 for Windows XP from Alky Project

    People hate change!

Vista is a bit buggy at the moment for games etc but to be honest I would expect a hacked version of DX10 willnot be without its faults.

I use vista on my laptop for work (not games) and I think its very good to be fair.

Re: Direct x 10 on Xp, whats the latest?

just looking in how to dual boot at the mo, good site here:-
How to dual-boot Vista with XP - step-by-step guide with screenshots | APC Magazine

so i can use xp for my apps, d/loads, etc and use visa with its directx 10 for games.
Fairly long winded instruction, i already have partition on my c drive (60 gb free) wonder if it will just install vista on that?

What vista-specific bugs have you come across?

wouldnt currently bother with dx10, crysis has shown it to be a sham. and similar graphics quality with a higher fps can be achived with dx9 and some config tweaks.

I dunno.......i loaded up Bioshock in DX9 and DX10 and there was a noticeable difference in quality @ DX10.

(Full eye candy on with my 'old' EVGA 320mb 8800GTS btw ....ran like a dream)

did anyone read one of the gaming mags, cant think of the name off the top of my head, but they claimed that the dx10 eye candy in crysis can be turned on in the dx9 with a few small tweaks, they failed to give the tweaks tho

gaming mags? what are they then?

    TweakGuides.com - Crysis Tweak Guide

    thats what you want.

another example of "the power of dx10" would be gears of war. ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE between dx9 and dx10 apart from a performance hit

Re: Direct x 10 on Xp, whats the latest?

Not directed as a flame at anyone however I do find it mildly amusing that people knock Vista in EXACTLY the same way XP was knocked and stalwarts swore blindly they would never use it and Windows 2000 was gonna stay around. When I first tried Vista I hated it, drivers were sh1t and buggy, if available at all, but the OS and the driver support has matured very well. Of course alot of games will take a knock, 99% of them weren't written with Vista in mind and the rest are early tries by developers getting used to the new structure.

I still think true DX10 showcases are yet to come through and it will show its strengths in 2008, however I dont see DX10 on XP as a sustainable project on so many levels, however I hope they give it a go and it works out for those with a mindset on XP

Vista will be better in the end, there are a lot of under the hood improvements, however I wont be installing Vista again until its out of its public beta testing stage....

conspiracy theory, a well talked about one - vista has no killer app, so they make dx10 vista only. as dx10 offers no clear advantages they need to castrate dx9 in games.

id say, certainly in the cases of crysis and gears of war they have been caught with there pants down. and far from going ott on minor points, i dont think enough has been made of it

Your deluding yourself if you believe this is the case. The graphical progression of games will continue as it has always with or without the introduction of DX10, and there is doubtless a significant performance hit when moving to Vista for the same level of quality. Engine writers, for the most part, are really rather clever you know, and really, for the most part, know their 'stuff' quite well. DX10 hasn't suddenly opened for them a whole new world of abilities that were impossible before.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

My sound drivers are awful, they sometimes work but sometimes i just get sounds repeated contantly until it feels like stopping. Very annoying.

Installing Nero 7 means I get a "Com surrogate" error whenever I open a folder with divx movies and such like inside them. (This is fixable I believe but I havn't looked at how to do it yet)

It's annoying as it always seems to go to a blank screen whenever windows does anything. On my laptop it doesn't remember any screen brightness settings.

kaspersky which I need to update to the new version is annoying on it and is constantly throwing up user check windows that don't appear in XP and are pretty pointless.

It's not particularly bad, it's just annoying. Considering the spec of my laptop I would expect it to run a bit smoother than it does to. XP is lovely on it.

    Yup, it's just you..

I had nearly all those same issues on my parent's laptop - I removed vista and put XP on it, and all of a sudden everything works properly and the battery life has increased by nearly an hour as well.

DX10 is purely a marketing exercise in order to attempt to sell more copies of the OS because it's not selling on it's own at all.

If Vista was a revolution in computing then people would buy it, but it's not - it's a half-arsed bloated bastard-child of a turd.

The hardware requirements are ridiculous for practically no gain (I've had XP running quite nicely on a P2-266 before), and they've managed to make everyday tasks which were simple in XP a magnitude harder in Vista for no apparent reason?

Stick it back in development for a couple more years and you might end up with something workable, but they'll be trying to peddle the next version by then, which kinda makes it like Windows ME all over again..
