I have an old laptop drive in an external enclosure due to a hardware failure of the laptop this Summer. I want to get the files off my old user account, but I'm not sure how to do it. Any ideas?

If it is locked with an XP or similar account, you might be able to create a account with the same username and access the files. If not then as above, copy and paste job.
If the file permissions were created in a user account, you will have tto log on as administrator and take ownership of them before you can copy them across. (Re-creating the account name is unlikely to work because the SUID is unique).
