EEE PC Users unite...and share info :)

On what extra stuff you have added changed/added/removed to improve the features.

I figured with quite a few people having bought one it would be a useful thing to have (and I'm getting mine on Friday).

I plan to stick a 4gb SD card in and keep the native OS for now (maybe migrate to another linux distro at a later date) and was looking for useful stuff for it, like software, tips to improve performance etc (possibly dual boot XP off a USB stick at a later date)

You could upgrade the RAM to 1Gb.

I do know about the RAM...plan to do it when I get my student loan

I was also reffering to things like software you added to replace stuff on currently or maybe things you find useful, like bluetooth tools etc.

You seen the hardware haks to add more storage?

There is a cool hack to add USB ports and USB ped drives. Have a hunt on Engadget, they had the hack on there. They also added a BlueTooth dongle as well.

Re: EEE PC Users unite...and share info :)

I plan on upping the ram for it and eventually following the guide that frees up space one you delete whatever standard apps you dont actually want.

I've got a toggle script that decides whether the machine goes into suspend mode on closing the screen, however, some people on the EEE forum are saying its better not to have the screen next to the keyboard when it gets hot (is this true? does it make a difference?)

I've gone into advanced desktop mode and installed Fluxbox to save some of that precious precious screen space I've embedded an aterm console in the background and currently I use a run dialog to load all programs. I'd love for something like Launchy: The Open Source Keystroke Launcher for Windows to come out, then I'll use that

Software wise, I've installed Opera however, every now and again it spikes; it does this on my work Gentoo box as well so i'm gonna stick with Firefox for now.

I also installed Xampp (well, LAMPP for linux) which is an all in one web server for mysql php etc. It's really handy with the type of work I'm doing.

Not received mine yet, what sort of RAM does it take? Standard DDR2 - or are there something laptop specific? [Not owned a laptop for a long time]

Mine will be arriving tomorrow - I'm probably going to play with it a bit as is, but I intend to whack in a 2 gig stick of ram. an nLited XP installation may follow, as I am loving the idea of playing Unreal Tournament completely flawlessly on the move

UT is linux-native, you wouldn't need windows for it

Re: EEE PC Users unite...and share info :)

Well apparently I get mine on monday now....might see if it arrives in the centre tomorrow and call them to collect it, I want my baby now!

Got a silly email from scan telling me it was out of stock in white after I asked them to amend my order from the 4gb white to whichever 4gb one came in stock first.....

Turns out mine will probably be delayed until the big shipment during the next two weeks. *sigh*

Perhaps delaying gratification will make it feel even better when I finally get my hands on it

Re: EEE PC Users unite...and share info :)

the advanced mode is a great improvement on the standard interface, providing a KDE desktop.

However I then moved onto eeeXubuntu which seems to work well, being focussed on the eee & using the much lighter weight Xfce desktop. I re-used all the standard 4Gb.

On of the benefits is a functional hibernate mode - faster boot than from cold & no power usage - unlike sleep.

plan on going to 2GB - it's DDR2 SODIMM - scan have it for under £30, but seems a bit mean to use free p&p fro so little, so waiting till I need to order more than that...

PS great idea for a thread - Mods could we make this, or an edited tips - sticky?

Still using 'Easy' mode on mine 'cos I'm lazy, but I've added and pinned the various debian repositories and modified the default layout a bit. Will wait till the new year and then throw in 2gb of RAM, an 8GB SDHC card and an nLite'd XP SP3 on there and see how it goes!

Re: EEE PC Users unite...and share info :)

I 've had one since release date a while back,

It worked as I wanted straight out of the box (good wifi browser with firefox).
Only thing I have altered is upgraded skype to latest version so it can do video calls (which needs an ever so slight single-line hack).

I end up using it in preference to my £1000 121" laptop most of the time

Only downside for me is the screen could be wider (wish it was 1024x768 so I wouldn't ever need to sideways scroll in firefox)
