I'm after some photo viewing software. I want to be able to make a sildeshow, taking photos from several folders, to be shown in random and the option to show the contents of a single folder in random as well.
Any recommendations please?

IrfanView 4.10 Graphics Viewer + Plug-Ins/Add-Ons 4.10 will do that and more for you (under File >> Slideshow).
...that reminds me. You don't need the plug-ins to do what you want, IrfanView will do all of what you want out of the box - the plug-ins package just adds a ton of fancy features / added functionality, worth the extra IME.

FastStone Image Viewer will do most of that straight out - I'm not sure about selecting folders manually, but it will let you select or deselect sub-folders. View > Slideshow. Cracking, quick and light viewer.

Cheers guys I will have a look at those today. Also found one called Picviewer which seems alright.

I also use Irfanview and have done for years. It even has batch processing with resizing and renaming etc. Very good program...and it's free!

Picasa should be able to do that.
Another vote for IrfanView.
If you want to pay for commercial software then I highly recommend ACDSee 10 Photo Manager. It's not cheap at £28.99 for just a photo organiser but it is superb. It doesn't do photo-editting by the way.
