Core2Duo - Now should I bother with vista?

Not really been tempted by vista, still running good old 32bit XP pro and not havign any problems really.

But I'm planning to format in afew days and recently upgraded to a Core2Duo rig....is it worth switching to vista to take advantage of 64bit? Or is Vista still teething? There's afew Vista only games coming this year that might just tempt me over.....When's the service pack I keep hearing about due?

    Thanks!

Re: Core2Duo - Now should I bother with vista?

A C2D setup with about 2GB of RAM should run Vista ok. Although I think for gaming and general better Vista experience 4GB of RAM seems to do the trick

The service pack is out on RC I think, so the proper release will be along shortly, most of the really annoying issues are solved with HotFixes/updates.

Why not dual boot both XP and Vista?

Vista's okay now, but dual booting is still a good idea if you're gaming. I'd also go with 4gb (seeing is it's stupid cheap too..) and 64bit Vista isn't really any harder to live with than 32bit (as driver support for both versions is about the same).

The service pack is indeed in RC stage now, all 1 gb of it (!)

If your going to be gaming i would also recomend you go with a dule boot setup. So far apart from the initial shock of not being able to find anything in Vista gaming has been the only disapointment. I always fall back to XP for my gaming needs.

I'll be in the same situation in a couple of months when I replace mobo/cpu/ram. I really would like to see tangible benefits from vista before handing over the dosh especially as I have an xp disk and licence.

Re: Core2Duo - Now should I bother with vista?

    i've tried vista 64 on 2 and 4 gigs.
for gamers you NEED 4 gigs, for everyone else 2 i suitable.
just looking at my desktop, nothing else ,and vista is using 1.4 gigs of ram....

Re: Core2Duo - Now should I bother with vista?

I'm dual-booting XP Pro and Vista Ultimate 32-bit (no 64-bit disk on student discount at the local store ). I really like Vista, but I seem to spend most of my time in XP even when doing day-to-day work because thats where my games are. But Vista for the most part has run with no problems at all. I'd suggest a dual-boot too; just rememebr to install XP first!

To Chunter: Vista is using a lot of that 1.4 GB to cache your most used programs so they will launch faster. It frees this memory up as needed foro ther apps. THis is a common misconception about Vista - it doesn't hog all that memory just to operate; its actually helping you.

Re: Core2Duo - Now should I bother with vista?

I was already palnning on the upgrade to 4gb of ram as it's just so cheap right now anyway.

I've never used duel boot and know very little about it, I'll do a little research as it seems to be the popular solution here.

    Cheers guys.

Re: Core2Duo - Now should I bother with vista?

Vista has been somewhat ironed out now... You wont have too many problems with games on Vista, allow some time to get used to Vista also properlly configure the crappy settings that are default (So many options that "enhance user experience" are seriously annoying and repetitive)

If you want to buy another 2GB of ram do so, it should add a little ooomf to the overall experience..

Good luck with it all =]

Re: Core2Duo - Now should I bother with vista?

if your gaming stick to xp

vista service pack is out in beta, wait for the final version and see if it's caught up to xp in speed, then decide.

if not gaming then it's more even stevens.

Re: Core2Duo - Now should I bother with vista?

Jezzz......all i read is 'Vista is bad for gaming'.

    RUBBISH!!!!

This has been dragged through 1000's of times now and in all the threads they are reading the same from people that have hardly even used it.

I installed Vista Ultimate 64Bit in November 2006 (day after MSDN release).

Up until February/March the drivers were shocking making gaming awful.

Ever since there are no problems gaming and it runs as good as XP does for the games i play. (BF2/Bioshock/UT3/BF2142/Oblivion/COD4).

The crossover from 98SE to XP was FAR MORE haroowing than the one from XP to Vista.
    Instead of either:
    a) Trying it for a day and giving up.
    b) Just listening to other maons about it
    c) Being scared to use and so knocking it anyway

Just get your 4gb of RAM, install the OS, and play.

If you are careful and set up correctly you wont have problems.

If you rush it and dont give it any thought (like most people that think its still flakey), then you will get problems.

At best it was much later in the year, at worst it's still 'getting there' driver wise. I'd say with nVidia they really didn't get on top of things till the last quarter (for gaming) and for other things (HD playback) they've a little way to go. Creative - well.. ATI were much better off from the start (radically actually). The important thing to remember is that depending on your own set of hardware your mileage may vary - i've never seen the file copy bug on multiple systems for example but I don't deny it's existance.
