    Zone Alarm, and Fire Walls

Hullo, does anyone know of any other decent free Fire Walls other than Zone Alarm?

I think there's something wrong with the free version of ZA, I've tried to install it on 3 different PCs and keep getting the same error at the end of the installation ("the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142)")

Re: Zone Alarm, and Fire Walls

I'm using COMODO Firewall Pro atm, it's not ideal because it will ask you 6-10 times per install OR you have to click "Turn me off for 30 seconds", neither one is ideal but hey, it's free.

agh, I must be jinxed! It only supports Vista and XP SP2 so that won't install either.

Re: Zone Alarm, and Fire Walls

Jetico Personal Firewall is some serious kit, much better than most paid Firewalls...

It was free around 4 months ago and was still the most effective Firewall (in tests) If its still free its worth a shot if you want peace of mind.

Re: Zone Alarm, and Fire Walls

When it comes to firewall I think I have read so many good reviews about Comodo since zone alarm is getting up too much RAM. I have tried Comodo and I think it is a good firewall as well.

Re: Zone Alarm, and Fire Walls

Comodo is due for some serious additions at the end of this month, including some AV ability.
I'll wait 'til its settled a bit then give it a try (running CFP2.4 atm).

I did try OnlineArmor and liked it, but with CFP, boot is 20s faster and apps open more quickly.

I use Comodo on my XP partition, and to get around the installation hassles (it was literally keeping certain things from installing because of its prompts), turn off Defense+. I don't really see the point behind it anyways; I just want the firewall to keep thingso ut; I don't need it monitoring what *I'm* doing too. lol Defense+ is more annoying than UAC in Vista!

Sorry think I've misread your sentence. Are you saying that Comodo is 20 seconds quicker in booting?

I have also tried OnlineArmor but I ran into problems with it. Can't remember what they were. May have been the process running OA staying at 100% when I ran a game or something that had been authorised.

ZA is the antichrist of firewalls. Commodo has garned my love attention recently, before that i was using the (fiddly) PC tools firewall.

Ain't that the truth. In my life I've used Norton/Symantec - ZA - Sunbelt Kerio - Comodo - OnlineArmor - (back to) Comodo.

    Comod easily the best.

Sorry - booting in to XP Pro is 20s quicker when using CFP instead of OA.

Right thanks. Don't think I had that problem with OA but I didn't really like OA at all.

Re: Zone Alarm, and Fire Walls

I don't have any problems using ZoneAlarm on my Vista installation (I've used it for years, and the only reason it isn't on my XP installation is because I heard it doesn't play nice with Steam...Comodo seems to be a good gaming firewall, especially after turning Defense+ off.
