Question Advice on simple website authorting tool

    Hi all,

My Dad is looking to put together a professional looking web site for a local charity that he helps run. He has asked me to advise on the right kind of tools for this job.

The site will be like many small business sites, offering news, and information, links to useful resources, contact information, possibly a commerce component.
Its likely he will be the only person updating it.

My Dad is very capable technically, but doesn't know anything about web design or maintenance.

    He uses Windows XP.

Can you recommend a web authoring and maintenance tool? Is Front page a good choice? Is there anything better? My Dad is very willing to spend time to learn what is required, but he won't want to waste time learning about web design esoterica.

Any thoughts and advice much appreciated!

On a side note, can anyone recommend a good low-cost and reliable hosting service?

    Thanks!

    Mut.

There are a number of CMS (Content Management Systems) that might be an idea for your Dad to look at, and prices ranging from free to VERY expensive ('price of a nice house'-type sums).

These will require some work/expertise to set up and some design work to get looking pretty initially, but are designed to separate the design of the system from the maintenance of content. The whole point is that once set up, the people adding or removing or amending pages don't need to know ANYTHING about web design, or servers, or coding, etc. Basically, they set up a publishing engine, and it's little more than cut and paste the content, and fill in a form.

The packages I use are commercial and aren't particularly cheap (though not highly expensive either), but I'm sure there'll be plenty of people round here with experience of the free versions.

Alot of cms systems require hosting that has php/mysql support, so bear that in mind. Some of them are really good though, and very customisable.
In the internets, no one can hear you sarcasm.

To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

Re: Advice on simple website authorting tool

    Thanks for the advice..
I personally run a website using Mambo with Gallery integrated.
I would say that is still too time-consuming for what is needed, and as small to medium site CMS, its really aimed at having multiple contributors.

As mentioned, any site will require design and setup.....so I guess I'm looking for specific application recommendations...

I hear lots of vaguely bad things about Front Page - is there anything actually wrong with it, or are there better tools?

    Thanks!
