    Re: Recovering after format?

A quick Google search using the terms restore lost partitions threw up a load of links including

    Active@ Partition Recovery.Restoring lost partition.Recovering MBR.

    Restoring Lost Data Software

    Lost Partition Rescue

windows Lost Partition Data Recovery 2.0.1.5 - Windows XP formatted crashed FAT NTFS partition hard disk drive Files data...

The format has wiped out the partition table but with a bit of luck the master file table and the data may still be intact. DON'T use the disk - at all!, and don't rush into anything. You need to take a step back from the problem and consider all the options carefully. If the data on there is critical, you may want to consider taking a clone (logical bit copy) of the disk to another one, and work on that - then if you make a mistake, you still have the original disk, from which you can make another copy.

Alternatively you may want to consider a data recovery company - but not a cheap option (but most offer no-fix, no-fee terms)

Just done a little more searching - these two look OK - but I must stress that I haven't ried them myself.

FAT16, FAT32, NTFS data recovery software - do it yourself data recovery and digital image recovery.

Data Recovery Software - Hard Drive Recovery - RAID Data Recovery

Active@ is really a superb product. I can recommend it.

Try the demo to see if it can recover what you want. Chances are if nothings been wrote to it, you'll get the majority of it back fine.

It depends on the type of format.
The majority will just mark the space as unused without removing the actual data (which is pointless for most people as it just takes longer).

    Re: Recovering after format?

Accidentally deleting files is something we all try to avoid, but it can happen on occasion... Emptying the recycle bin before checking its contents, performing a Shift+Delete on a file or folder, or deleting a file from the command line can all render your data invisible to XP, and seemingly lost forever... This can be quite upsetting if the data in question was something you've spent a lot of time working on... Fortunately, your chances for recovery of deleted data are actually quite good, especially if you take immediate action...

Windows XP does not ship with any application for assisting you in recovering your data, so I would recommend using a free application called Restoration (mirror)... This program is very effective at recovering deleted files from your hard drive... The application does not require installation either, so it is a handy application to carry on a USB flash drive as well...Simply select the drive you'd like to restore from in the pulldown menu at the upper right, then click on the "Search Deleted Files" button... After the search is complete, select the files you'd like to restore and click on the "Restore By Copying" button...

It is important that you try to restore your files either to another drive or partition, so as to avoid overwriting information on your source drive... So if you only have one drive/partition, try to restore the data to diskette, USB flash drive, or a network drive...
