    All this Vista talk

Well I was bored so I'm sticking Vista32 Ultimate on the missues laptop while I'm at work, that way she cant complain for me doing it at home when I should be spending time with the family and she cant complain that I'm doing it after shes gone to bed which is usually when she uses it..

So, what codec packs are recommended for Vista as all shes uses it for it streaming media off the NAS box at home and when I had Vista64U on my main machine I suffered from lots of stuttering etc when trying to watch stuff directly on my PC...

ffdshow is a good place to start tbh. Be wary of codec packs - some do more harm than good.

    Re: All this Vista talk

    ffdshow, RealAlternative and QTAlternative

Then use either VLC or MediaPlayerClassic for playback. job done

For AV I use Avast! but there is a whole thread about the best AV solutions from last week

    Re: All this Vista talk

Oh - and video driver issues can cause stuttering too.

In terms of AV I can't really fault Kaspersky 7. And a vote for ffdshow too.

    Re: All this Vista talk

be sure to use the "ffdshow tryouts" - regular ffdshow is antique

also, install the haali media splitter to add support for more file extensions (mkv, ogm, and more)

could be the wireless network thats also causing the stuttering, if you're wirelessly connecting to the NAS.

Stuttering was on my old machine even when using files stored locally.
