It's basically using the BOINC software. Might be worth devoting a few cycles to.

Yeh I've just been reading the climateprediction site. The project was featured on the BBC lunchtime news so I expect that will increase the userbase somewhat. Can only be a good thing.

I already do Einstein, Climate Prediction and some other project I can't remember the name of, so I think I'll give this a miss!

I've just started this recently. It is a massively intensive task and not something we can easily get results from by other means.

As far as the project is concerned I find it one of the least rewarding in terms of visual satisfaction of progress. There is no easy indication of how well you are progressing, and you are allocated work tasks appropriate to your computer, so it'll always take about 3 months of cpu time to finish a task. Seeing a spinning globe and knowing that you've only done 0.05% of the total is hardly inspiring!

They want to predict what'll happen to the climate by using your PC's spare cycles, this means it doesnt idle and uses more power, power that when generated is causing climate change....

and was in their faq as "yeah, we know, but it makes exactly this amount of difference: 0.00000000001%" or something like that

at any rate, this was work related - cp.net is based a few offices down from me

Probably a similar difference to the amount of effect the human race is having on climate change, still every little helps and we can all make a difference just by turning down our heating by a few degree's or changing to energy saving light bulbs...
