Hey guys, new to folding@home though used to crunch primes for years before it became a well known benchmarking tool. They used to have cash prizes if you found a new one! So my motivation for that was my interest in numbers and maths and the idea that at the time, it was better odds and payout than playing the national lottery, even though it was free! (So makes you wonder playing the lottery is actually hopeless).
Started my PC folding about a week ago or so I guess, done 5 work units so not into it yet but I can see myself getting into it. Just doing it because it's something to do, I guess.Although I'm sure it's for a worthy cause I'm not trying to save the world, as such.
So was wondering, those who build several high powered multi-core crunching machines for the purposes of number crunching and distributed computing... how come? Is it just a hobby? Or do you feel like you're making a difference? Or a bit of both? Or is it just great seeing your name get on the leaderboards?
Answers on a postcard....
