    Creating Partitons

    Hello,

My laptop arrived yesterday and I've just about got everything transferred over. I would like to be able to create a partition for the Operating System and one for everything else - encase I need to re-install for some reason. Right now I have the "C Drive" named "OS" and a "D Drive" named "Recovery". I'm not sure what the recovery partition is for, it came like that.

I was just wondering, does Vista have to be re-installed for me to create a partition, or is there an easier way to do it? If I have to re-install then I'll just leave it

    Thanks in advance,
    Steven

    hello steven

do you want to create or remove a partition? windows vista will be able to manage that you simply go to control panel click administrative tools and you will see disj managment clikc that and you will see what partions you have. if you want to delete it then simply right click and click delete or if you want to add one check its feature because i am not sure if you could create one in that way. there is a software call partition manager which manages all your partition see if you could get the free version good luck!!!

if you don't have original install media, make sure you use whatever app they provide to create an install cd from your recovery partition BEFORE you blow it away

It's actually showing 4 in there, two are unnamed and can't be seen by going to "My Computer". Ideally I'd like to split up the C drive. Creating a partition for everything except the OS.

It looks like you have a preinstalled OEM laptop - if they DIDN'T provide you with a way to either reinstall Windows (ie a Windows DVD) there's generally a recovery partition (in your case D: Recovery) on the machine. Before you do ANY monkeying around with partitions you need to make sure that you're in a position to recover the machine in event of failure - there's usually some way to create recovery CD/DVDs on this kind of machine - you should do so before changing anything.

If you're not sure then could you post the make/model of your laptop?

I'm not exactly sure what the recovery drive is for. I do however have a Windows Vista Business Reinstallation DVD.

How big is the recovery partition? It would be worth backing up everything in it to another DVD before you start changing things. What make of laptop is it? You may finfd that the recover partition contains configuration files and drivers for the system, for use in the event of a system re-install.

Yep - as you may have guessed you need to be 100% sure that you no longer need the stuff on the disk that you're repartitioning (and always ALWAYS ensure anything that you require is backed up and verified before you start).

You shouldn't need to reinstall Vista if all you're doing is resizing the partition, though bear in mind that you need to allow for growth of size of your system - don't shrink your Vista partition so there's no free space as A ) your system performance will suck and B ) as soon as you need to install something (even if it's only a new driver) you'll be needing to resize partitions again.

Finally - whatever solution you use for resizing partitions make sure that you let it run to completion. It may look like it's crashed, it hasn't. Partition resizing can take a long time, and deciding to shutdown your machine partway through inevitably leads to tears.

    Re: Creating Partitons

I think I'll just leave it at the moment. It seems like an awful lot of effort just to make a new partition. Though, it could've proved to be a good decision in the future.
