Useful apps on a USB stick

With the prices of USB sticks going lower everyday, has anyone got suggestions for useful apps to use on them for keeping profiles, backing up data, encrypting, keeping passwords or even something I have not though of ?

    Any suggestion welcome!

There are options for putting an entire OS on a USB stick - so you have an OS with your preferences and settings - completely separate to the host computer, with you at all times.

Yeah, I've used Puppylinux quite a bit in the past, very useful! It's great to have everything laid out how you like it, with all your programs and files wherever you need them.

Doesn't work though as if you use Windows it'll fall over on booting with different hardware - unless it happens to be very similar, as in same chipset, no change between PATA and SATA, same graphics drivers, same sound, etc, then if you're using Windows you'll need to use a Retail license, and even then it would be very dubious (as in I haven't read, but can't imagine it would be valid).

It's a nice idea for something like the Eee PC, but as a tool to run around with for fixing other PCs, it's not a viable alternative to a Linux LiveCD.

I love portable apps, if there's a portable version of something I'll use that instead. Even though I'm not (usually) running from a USB, I like the fact the apps keep to themselves!

BartPE can be made to run of a USB stick:
Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD very useful for maintance type things, but not really a desktop environment.

I find it useful to have my firefox bookmarks on a USB stick - I'm pretty sure you can even install the full browser onto a stick too (i.e: extensions and themes included) - anyone?
