    Online Databases... Anyone?

    Hi guys,

I need to create an online Database for a company (as like a favour to them) and I've been looking around at idea's, and ive come up empty.

I need a Database, much like Access or even Access if its possible, that can be accessed online, edited and store records.

Anyone have any suggestions/places to look etc?

Open source would be great, I've used stuff like Joomla and forum software, just never a database themed version.

    Thanks.

    Re: Online Databases... Anyone?

The real question is what kind of information you want to store and display? There's quite a few open source projects out there that offer various different features but picking the right one really depends on what you want the end result to be.

If it's simply that you want to be able to make and edit tables, phpmyadmin is the easiest interface I've used and comes by default with many linux based web hosting packages.

I went for the Open Office suite on my underpowered, under ram laptop. It has the equivalent of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access. Excel is pretty good at databases as well.

Best of all it runs quick and is free!

No! Excel is TERRIBLE at databases, or database-like arrangements of data. Crosslinking between workbooks is a real pain and often doesn't update properly.

Excel is a spreadsheet, not a database.

Why do so many people fail to grasp that? It infuriates me when people (my colleagues) try to use it when a simple database would be so much more effective!

Well - its a collection of data - therefore it can be used as a simple flatform database. However the term database is usually taken to mean a realtional database - which it certainly is not!

Act! for Web is pretty good but it all depends on what it will be used for and it is not free (well far from it) and even worse it is made by Sage.

Well i supose if people are going to call My i don't need referential integrety designed SQL a database, people could call access and excel the same.

What you want, and need, depends entirely on what your doing.

Why does the database need to be online, by putting data (generally has some value) online you drastically increase the chance of it been compramised?

If its the type of thing Access, or an Access like alternative can do, they are generally very good because require little technical knowledge, and are a fare starting point until the firm grows. I'd sooner have to "upgrade" an poorly designed access database, than a bizzare custom PHP + MySQL thing. (generally speaking ANYONE who advocates this langauge has NEVER used a proper database, or had to maintain a SME like app that uses one, there are many better (in stability, performance and functionality) free alternatives about).

At the moment i've been bringing up to scratch systems and databasing for a small hedge fund who had thankfully used some access, thou a little too much was Excel + VBA. (ie, i'm not a web developer giving the only advice he knows).

To be honest then, I'd consider using forum software for the job, they're searchable, have fairly simple access control (though nothing I'd want to trust secure data to!) and it's easy to colaborate on them (for example, give people mod powers so they can edit posts, if not, a thread grows organically and appoint someone to update the first post)

There's plenty of free ones out there.

    Re: Online Databases... Anyone?

Ok, I've decided to go with Access, I basically want 3 tables -

A menu (or form), 2 buttons going to People (contact info) and Enquiries (about any given thing)

It will only be being accessed by 2 people at once, but online functionality would be nice, how is that possible, what does an Access database need to function online?

    If that makes sense!

MySQL is not actually a database itself, it is a RDBMS (relational Database management System) - some of the database engines it can manage support Relational Integrity, others do not.

SQL (structured Query Language) is a language for (surprise) structured querying of a relation database - MySQL is one (open source) implementation of it. Access supports another vesrion forits embedded JET edatabase engine.

But I think MySQL is the RDBMS behind Hexus, and it seems to power Hexus OK...

Access can be brought to an intranet easily with sharepoint:

    but its limited.

Share point is only good when your trying to do what they want you too, as soon as you do something MS didn't expect, its a world of hurt. Note, nothing like as much as a world of hurt the 'average' php site is.
