Neither if you value detection and removal.

    AntiVir.

Opinion backed up with experience and necessity. The experience of cleaning people's messed up systems on a regular basis and the necessity to do it quickly. ...and you don't pay me enough to care what you install on your box. Take it or leave it - in a strictly nice way

And Agent is right. You'd be a bit foolish not to use any one of three free ones.

AVG if it has to be free.

Otherwise I've stuck to NOD32, has yet to fail me

    Re: avg or avast?

AntiVir does seem to have a better detection rate but after using it for a couple of days using it I've discovered an annoying flaw (with the free version).

    F***ING, B***DY POPUPS!

It would be nice to sit down to play a few hours of Oblivion without the game minimising just to display a big banner telling me to but AntiVir, frankly its more likely to make me delete the damn thing and go back to AVG.

If it's the nag screen you are on about, then you can disable it. Just google "disable antivir nag screen" (it's no state secret, but they will put a stop to it eventually).
