    win95 problem

    Evening all,

I have a very old laptop that a friend needs sorting with Windows 95 on, it was booting fine until she decided to put office on it. After the reboot it came up with

Error: An I/O subsystem driver failed to load Either a file in the .\iosubsys subdirectory is corrupt or the system is low on memory.

After a few hits on google It pointed me to this article

    http://support.micrsoft:225497

However this did not fix the problem, it just wont boot into 95 normally I would like to avoid formatting the thing, as this was bought form a computer fair (no driver discs) and I'm not in the mood for searching for the drivers, the thing has no lan port or usb (so I cant use my trusty pen drive to load the drivers)

Any suggestions from you knowledgeable lot

I had the same thing happen a while back with an ePC and windows 98. Basically, the HDD was shagged

This was proved when I booted to the command line and started using 'dir'. It showed some files with funky names and file sizes (64gb file called ~~# or something, on a 20gb HD :/).

Check your windows directory and the windows/system one.

Well I've managed to fix it by doing the following:

    • Adding the lines in Config.sys: Device=c:\windows\himem.sys Device=c:\windows\emm.386 /noems
    • Removing smartdrv.exe from the computer
    • Rebooting

I found this fix via google
