    SATA Drivers

I am running Vista Ultimate on the following spec computer:

    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-965G-DS3
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4ghz) Socket 775 FSB1066 4MB Cache
    Memory: 4GB (2x2GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400
    Hard Drives: 1 x Samsung SpinPoint P 325GB 7200RPM SATA 3GB/s 16MB Cache
    1 x Samsung SpinPoint P 500 GB 7200RPM SATA 3GB/s 16MB Cache

When I installed Vista some time ago I did not install SATA drivers from a floppy. Ever since I have been wondering if this is something I should have done. Will I gain much from installing them and reinstalling windows?

If so how is this done? Are these the drivers for raid? which I do not want to use or some other drivers. I recall this is why I did not install them in the first place because I was unsure exactly what to install.

    Many thanks for any advice

    Re: SATA Drivers

No, you won't be missing out.

They would be the AHCI (I believe that ICH8 supports AHCI under Vista) or RAID drivers.
You have said that you aren't running RAID & imo AHCI doesn't really bring anything for the average desktop mobo except possibly for use with eSATA.

    Re: SATA Drivers

I suppose I was hoping to use the eSATA feature on my external hard drive. In order to do this what drivers would I need to install?

    Re: SATA Drivers

vista includes a number of drivers for assorted sata controllers. unless you went into your bios and forced "ye olde ide emulatione mode", you're fine

you need to do that PRE BOOT UP>...it's not like USB. I was told it would be....but it's not worked on any of my PC's

Always needs booting, and then don't forget...it might need a partition!

    Re: SATA Drivers

    never has for me

I have to turn my PC off before putting any SATA drives on. I have a SATA caddy, and I cant just whack it in. It just won't wash. But I reboot and it works fine.

If it's a NEW DISK DRIVE, it might not have a partition at all, in which case you need to partition the drive, then, in windows, format it

Without a partition, the drive won't "exist" as it has no table structure, no beginning and end for the Operating System to see.

I've not used Vista, but for XP, I put the XP disk in, change the BIOS of my motherboard to BOOT FROM CD FIRST, and then when the XP disk runs, you get an option to CREATE PARTITION.

MAKE SURE ITS THE NEW DRIVE...

then once it's done, reboot, change the boot order back to from your first hard drive, and whrn you're in Windows, you'#ll be able to see it.

Then RIGHT CLICK IT, and choose FORMAT
