well in my opinion go for xp mce because most of the programs dont support vista and vista take its time to boot up as my cousin is always complaing about it but its up to you![]()
I classify my self insane
What's the Gigabyte GA P35-DS4, iP35 Express mobo like? Only asking cos I've my brother bought one recently but has now decided to go down the AMD road. If it ok I might bung him a few quid and take it off his hands.
@ lilcompt:
Yeah I was thinking the same. mce seems a bit more user friendly.....and its a damn sight cheaper lol
@Peterb: Yeah I'll agree with both yourself and Directhex but sometimes its a case of better the devil you know. I kinda know windows.......but Linux is new territory to me
Aren't XP MCE and Vista Home Premium pretty much the same price? VIsta does have the advantage that it will be supported longer going forward. As for the "most programs don't support it" argument... meh, I'm not going to get into it. My thoughts are posted elsewhere on the forums plenty of times.
EDIT - just checked scan and OEM prices show Vista Home Premium as being £6 cheaper. The Linux solution is pretty damned good though...
Vista would be better IMO, wont go for XP now...

I'd go Vista HP too, though for a purely media PC that used MCE for anything other than TV watching/recording I'd go 32-bit rather than 64-bit. Vista x64s media center is 64-bit (not as obvious as that sounds lol) and as such it requires 64-bit capable codecs and plugins, and it's still causing a few problems with non-DVR-MS files, particularly HD movies and files.
I only use mine for TV so it's of no concern to me. I'll be performing a full reinstall of my HTPC when I get my main PC rebuilt and I think I'm going to give this MythTV a whirl, just to gain a little bit of knowledge more than anything. Can't see me sticking with it, but if there's no viable reasons why not when I get it going, I'll just keep it.![]()
