Best fool-proof anti-virus for parents computers?
Doing some maintenance on my parents' computers today (a desktop and a laptop), I found that AVG hasn't really been doing it's job, judging by the number of virii and trojans on one of the computers discovered by a manual AVG scan. AVG is scheduled to run updates and scans by itself, but doesn't seem to be doing so.
So, I'm thinking it's best to move their computers over to a paid AV. I was thinking of getting F-Secure AV - as I'm an F-Secure IS user myself, and know it to be quite lightweight but generally good, and their yearly fee includes up to three installations (ideal for a multi-computer household).
Just wondered if there were any alternatives I should consider? Besides the obvious ability to detect and protect against virii, it has to be (in order of importance):
- maintenance free and relatively fool proof (i.e. will routinely update and run scans without interruption or user interaction/confirmation etc)
- lightweight (the laptop is getting on a bit, so no resource hogs wanted)
- good value (like I mentioned with F-Secure - three licences included)
Thanks in advance for any pointers. :)

Sophos is pretty lightweight
Re: Best fool-proof anti-virus for parents computers?
I use ESET Smart Security, works for me :)
Re: Best fool-proof anti-virus for parents computers?
I use Kaspersky. It's about £15 on scan for 3 licences. Very light on resources and pretty much takes care of itself as long as spend 5 or 10 minutes setting it up on first install.
Re: Best fool-proof anti-virus for parents computers?
I moved from FSecure to Kaspersky and have to agree with Mike. It's a little more in-depth on initial setup than most others, but once configured it's damned good.

Try avast. It's free but I've gone between AVG and avast and had the same problems with AVG that you did.
Avast always updated itself without having to do anything(just pops up with a box on the taskbar saying the database has been updated. Also runs scans automatically.
Use it for my parents pc and they never have to touch it.

Agree with Mike on Kaspersky, need to spend the 10-20 minutes setting it up.
Re: Best fool-proof anti-virus for parents computers?
Ive used Kaspersky has trial, it "felt" heavier, took more resources perhaps, compared to ESET Smart security, in the end i settled with ESET. There are hot debates on which out of the two is the best (ESET or Kaspersky), IMO, any of the two will do.

Thanks muchly for the replies - looks like I'll be checking out Kaspersky and ESET. :)

My license was up for renewal, Kaspersky seemed a better value deal for my machines this time so I gave it a whirl and haven't looked back.

Kapersky or Nod32.......50/50 both are excellent.
I use Kapersky :)

people will hate me for this but i would say norton... you don't have to do anything... just handles itself

But isn't Sophos an enterprise AV only?
Re: Best fool-proof anti-virus for parents computers?
Primarily yes, but their small business solutions are pretty damned sweet.
Re: Best fool-proof anti-virus for parents computers?
if your workplace uses sophos, they normally allow employees to use it at home as my work does. Just check with them.

Another one for Kaspersky. Has never failed me once and is not very resource hungry at all.
If I am not mistaken there is a half price sale on their site at the moment. £12 for the year is a steal.
