    Question SATA as...?

My new system has a WD Raptor as the operating system disk and a 750Gb AKKS as the data disk on a P5K-Premium. I'm going to be installing Vista as soon as my new processor arrives. I would like to know which mode to run SATA as [IDE or AHCI?] as I am not going to be using RAID.

    Re: SATA as...?

ide compatibility mode is for people running old versions of windows who don't want the full speed or feature set from their drives

    Re: SATA as...?

I understand that AHCI gives more features, but will it make any difference as I'm not using RAID? I've also seen negative reports on NCQ so would like to confirm my settings before I install the OS!

    Re: SATA as...?

Just set it up as AHCI. Stick the drivers on a USB stick just in case the Vista installer doesn't detect them, and if you can't do that then it's only a trip into the BIOS to revert to IDE compatibility mode as a last resort.

AHCI will give you things such as hot-swap support - not necessarily something you'll need, but it's nice to make sure everything is on set to the latest standard. I'd just leave NCQ - the negatives are tiny (as are the positives 90% time to be honest too). You'd certainly not notice any loss through having it turned on without benchmarking.

    Re: SATA as...?

Cheers Gav, I'll do as suggested! I'd have thanked you, but I couldn't figure out how to do it!

You need so many posts before you thank I believe. I think it's 25 or something. No worries. I'm sure I can cope in life without it.

Let us know how you get on.
