    Suitable web server hardware

Ok. So our intranet machine has gone from hosting one very crude noticeboard to hosting our entire system. Currently it is a 1.2 Duron with 512mb of ram and we have around 30 active sessions accessing it at any one time now.

While I will be upgrading the processor/memory. I dunno if either are the actual problem here. Could the bottleneck be disk access? Should I be looking at a specific type of processor/memory?

EDIT: Ok, I've had 'top' running for a while now and I just saw apache2 max out the processor for 5-6 seconds which is a tad surprising!

I've tried looking around but not really found anything detailing what is recommended for such a server. It will be running gentoo with apache/php/mysql

Any info would be greatly appreciated, ta!

    pretty high

HP ProLiant DL360 G5 Small & Medium Business

the 360 would do it nicely - althought there are some seriously low cost S-Ata based boxes around.

running a copmlete intranet application for 30 users isn't going to be toobad - a couple of reasonable drives along 1 Gb of memory shoudl see you fine.

Dell seem to have some cheaper ones (although you always end up having to add a couple of hundred quids worth of options to the base specs) which should still be good enough, and a huge step up from a Duron.

It also depends a lot on the software your running on the box.

You should make sure you fully leverage the hardware you have at your disposal.

Give lighttpd a go, very easy to migrate from apache and much lighter.
