Question playing dvd's? help me please xD

Well i used to use my pc to watch dvds alot etc and it worked for awhile. Recently (passed few months) power dvd will just crash itself instantly when opening, this is a constant error even after reformatting about 5 times (not to fix this but 1 time was when i built new comp) and even on a different hard drive and a complete newly built system it still happens. I have been forced to use windows media player, it is the worst program i have used , that would start crashing too(1 out of 2 times it would crash) now after a new system built it works on media player, BUT i am having troubles viewing a dvd. You know when you put a dvd in you get all the anti piracy downlaoding and trailer crap? all that will be layered, about 3 or 4 lots of the same image constantly refreshing about 5cm apart(not watchable). It somehow sorted itself out when i was watching the movie but half way threw it went crazy it was all purple and green, like artifacts all over the place, it crashed my system but i managed to see the temps of my gfx card before that happened and it was at a measly 40C (8800GTS 512mb btw). Ive tried multiple disks and its the same, i have 1 liteon dvd combo and a msi dvd rw, both have the same problem except the msi drive wont pick up 300, i tried hotfuzz in there and it worked and then put 300 back in, detected it then. Im guessing this is a software related issue since the chances of both drives dieing is minimal.

Any suggestions? (sorry bout the long post )

    thanks

Re: playing dvd's? help me please xD

My guess is that powerdvd got worse after version 5. I bought a new copy of pdvd ultra and got drive thrashing on the install, and basically it did harmful things to my Vista installation. I did read in some av forums people were saying it was not infact compatible with vista, despite showing this on the box. It's also a mission to uninstall in my case, as add/remove programs didn't work.

Strange, I've got version 7 of Power DVD installed on Vista64, don't seem to have many problems other than the odd stutter when I'm drastically resizing the window.

Re: playing dvd's? help me please xD

You could try some alternative apps? Although, off the top of my head, I don't know if they work with Vista... but look at:

    1. VLC - media player
    2. Media Portal (very good DVD player integrated into that)

Both of the above are free.

  7. Received thanks from:

An FYI for people with PowerDvd 7, it needs an update to be Vista compatible, although I never had problems with mine before installing the update really, it was just a bit slower.
