    64 vs 32bit OS

This might be a lame question but...

Does a 64bit OS version (probably I'll go for XP) run programs faster or slower than a native 32bit OS?

Are there any incompatibilty issues regarding programs and 64bit OS? ie do some programs just not work on it?

I thought I'd get this clear before I get 4gb RAM and new OS!

    Thanks

    Re: 64 vs 32bit OS

16-bit apps won't run (e.g. installers for really old games)

32-bit apps don't run any faster, but 64-bit apps *may* see an improvement, depending on how they work

    Re: 64 vs 32bit OS

i know you said youll probably get xp BUT if you do get vista get the 64bit as i hear it is true dx10 (32bit doesnt or something like that) and 64bit can address the memory correctly. Its better to get 64bit.

    Re: 64 vs 32bit OS

as far as i know, 32 bit Vista does DX10 properly?

but yes, the 64bit version of XP or VIsta will address more than 4GB of memory, so if that's where you're heading, def worth going 64 bit.

    Re: 64 vs 32bit OS

Also worth noting is that there are some programs that just won't install on 64 bit XP, Windows Live messenger being one of them, but for the most part everything else I use runs fine ..

    Re: 64 vs 32bit OS

    Vista32/64 both run DX10 - no difference.

If you're going 64bit go Vista - MS have forced good driver support for 64bit Vista and it really shows.

I've yet to come across any software that I want to run that er.. doesn't on it

    Re: 64 vs 32bit OS

I was leaning towards XP 64bit just because it so well established.

Vista 64bit...I'm not convinced though I havnt used or seen it in action.

    Pros and Cons anyone?

XP 64 bit is anything but established! You will have way more problems with that than with Vista x64
If you're going Windows 64 bit, go Vista.

    Re: 64 vs 32bit OS

I ran 32bit Vista Ulitmate. Ran well. got a 3Dmark06 score of 10994.
Now run XP 64bit and everything runs just fine. 3Dmark06 score of 11614.

Quite a large score increase and the hardware never chamged. And yes, XP64 now sees all of my 4GB. It's VERY FAST. Way faster than Vista.

that will be the biggest mistake of your computing life, mark my words. It never gained decent support and now that VIsta 64bit is here, it never will. You are asking for trouble. I know Vista is a pain of an OS at present, but when talking 64bit, it's the windows OS of choice.

That's often the showstopper - XP x64 isn't a 64-bit recompile of XP x86, it's the 64-bit version of Windows Server 2003 and as such some apps spot that and refuse to install. Some apps can be made to install or run by using the Application Compatibilty modes (right-click them and hit properties then look through the tabs) but not all. Driver support (as already pointed out) for XP x64 is pretty poor.

Having used XP x64 for about a year I switched back to the regular 32-bit XP because I couldn't see any real benefit of it. I never do 3Dmark etc so can't say if gaming performance was much different (not that I noticed just from playing anyway) but the only slight advantage I found was that .NET apps seemed to run a bit quicker, notably the ATI Catalyst control center of that time.

To my thinking the only real benefit of XP x64 was the large-memory support. I haven't switched to Vista at all yet so maybe there are more advantages to Vista x64. Microsoft have suggested (IIRC) that the next version of Windows may be 64-bit only though which I guess would be a good thing, maybe it would be prudent to support the new architecture now...

    Re: 64 vs 32bit OS

I've moved over to 64bit Vista and I've had no problems so far apart from one anti spyware app refusing to install. If you use 64bit Vista your covering yourself for the future as I think PC's will need more than 4GB memory in the not so distant future. For older apps you could always use VMWare with a 32bit OS.
