My #1 essential for Vista, or any wondoze install is Acronis True Image.
Other than that. Opera for surfing, CCleaner - Home, Free Download Manager - absolutely free download accelerator and manager, GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program, Defraggler - Defragment your files!. I use MS office because I get it thro work.

'Essential' all depends on what you do with your PC

Safari isn't a good choice, it does nothing better than any of the competition.

For image editing, Paint.NET is an excelent peice of software, far better to use than the GIMP.

    Re: Software For Vista...Help!

    Hi Drobbins,

I started a thread on the best freeware for Vista a while ago that may help:

    http://forums.hexus.net/operating-sy...re-thread.html

I would also recommend the following:

    - Microsoft Office 2007 (not free, but works very well with Vista)
    - Auslogics Registry Defrag (freeware)
    - Futuremark PCMark Vantage (not free, benchmarking specifically for Vista/Vista 64)

    I hope that helps!
