Firewall - nearest to the old Sygate?

I used to love Sygate. Low resources, simple interfaces but all the info I wanted to see at a glance.

Of course, it died a horrible death, so what's the nearest thing to it? The Windows firewall doesn't provide enough info for my geekness.
Don't have to be free, but no more than say £15/$30.

Probably a silly question, but have you looked at Comodo?

Why not keep using Sygate - Vista? I'm still using Sygate Pro as it's excellent, the lack of updates makes no difference.

Comodo is not exactly simple, plus they have added all that defence nonsense... but still a very solid firewall

If its geekiness you want (as well as good solid protection), how about smoothwall on an otherwise reduntant PC? (Gives you separation of functions too - the smoothwall box is dedicated to the task)

You can install it without the Defence+ functionality enabled, though.

    Agent,

with the amount of parts you've got gathering dust have you thought of looking into m0n0wall or similar and building a firewall system ?

Just installed without the leak protection and Defence+. Then before you reboot open up Comodo manually, go into the Defence+ section and make sure it's 100% disabled - for some reason, even when deselecting Defence+ in the installation it still starts using it.

Software firewalls are redundant now in my opinion. A standard router firewall is entirely superior to a software firewall. If the standard ones you get on routers aren't good enough, you could always fork out that little extra to get a dedicated one.

And this stops outbound connections too does it?

I run a software firewall entirely because I want to control which software gets access to the net and when.

That really depends if you want to be pick about what applications, in particular, are allowed internet access on your PC.

Personally I like to allow/disallow everything that tries to get on the internet through my PC.

As you say above, the firewall on a router will do a sufficient job against hackers etc. but if you want to specify what you want on the internet (easily) then software firewall it is
